Do you need all of that Z height for the work you will be doing?

Its about 8.5 inches of usable z (400mm 2010 z ballscrew)

While a *majority* of the work will just be plywood cutting, 12-36mm birch, we do want to cut some 3d horn flares for loudspeakers out of foam, mdf, and ply layups.

I'll probably consider adding a second, removable extrusion piece to the x axis below the existing gantry for increased rigidity when we are cutting sheet goods fast.

The reason I asked about the Z height needs was because of your Y ballscrews mounted on top of the linear ways on that axis. To me that is inviting all kinds of problems. The brackets that hold the ballscrews could be swapped and the ballscrews mounted underneath the ways. That would protect them from all the dust from milling wood products and keep them out of harms way when loading material. Just a thought is all. Looks like a really nice build.

I would have flipped the Z motor over and mounted it to the backside of the Z bracket and connected it to the ballscrew with a belt. It would greatly reduce the moment of inertia and reduce rotations and ocilliations due to Y acceleration.

Yeah, im still figuring our the specifics of some y axis ball screw dust/bump covers. Essientially was thinking of bending up some sheet metal with 2 45 bends, and mounting it to the inside of my y extrusions facing outwards thus covering the y screws.

A lil stumped on adding dust protection to my x screw though.

I wanted to avoid belts of any kind, probably for no good reason. The z height looked tall but "fine" to me. Then I added the brake to the stack

Its all that weight concentrated way "up there". You've created a nice inverted pendulum that will be banging away at your linear bearings. I'd bet a good belt would not have any more backlash than the spider coupling you are using.

A bit of the fun part of diy i suppose, a project can always be modified.

In this case, the first thing i will do to combat he "pendulum force" in the trial phase will be to drop the z plate down 60mm where it attwches to my x carriage plate (my mounting holes are 60mm apart, so i can just "go down a rung" and lose 2 out of 8 m8 mounting points and 2 out of 6 m6 mounting point. This will at least center the load out a bit.

got power to the box today.

no smoke, semi good sign.

trying to troubleshoot why I cant enable my clearpath motors. Have the c86acc wired to relay 1 as no fault out as shown in attached schematic, all front jumpers set to "soft", the no fault jumper set to "acorn enable on" (schematic - https://www.centroidcnc.com/dealersuppo ... 072.r4.pdf)

jumpers on the rear are all set to active axis "off".

anyone have any helpful insight? report attached

Alright sorry for the double post but i wanted to leave my last one unedited to show my mistakes/troublesgooting

Obviously settin all active axis to off was incorrect.

I have changed x,y,z to pins 2/3 (on). A axis is left off. Now the axis slave, i currently have all 4 pin positions in slots 1/2. I would like to slave my y axis, and it seems like this is the correct layout for that?

I experimented with seapping the acorn enable pin between on and off but still experience immediate drive faults (cant get clearpath indicators to turn green)

Thanks ahead of time.
