in general i don't recommend using laptops or ethernet port adapters for CNC PC applications.
for low bucks you can buy a dedicated PC.

Things that will cause com errors

1.) using a RJ45 a bulk head connector

2.) Using a regular non-shielded Ethernet cable

3.) Using a USB Ethernet adapter.

4.) Ethernet adapter drivers on CNC PC haven't been updated

5.) ANY type of anti virus software installed, you can't just simply turn it off you have to uninstall it

6.) Windows fire wall blocking cncm.exe, cncr.exe, or cnct.exe

7.) Windows or Laptop bios power saving feature turning off the Ethernet adapter, Windows resetting the ip address automatically. Un select “Obtain an IP address automatically” in Windows ethernet adapter settings and select “ Use the following IP address”

Funny thing here, though, is the laptop and USB ethernet adapter worked, while the internal ethernet adapter on the cheap dedicated PC did not. We got some good sleuthing here regarding a possible RealTek bug and a workaround that will hopefully help some unlucky folks in the future.

lol.. glad you got it going.. just wanted to chime in on the adapter and laptop so others looking at this thread understand that laptops and adapters can sometimes cause the same issues you were having.

and more advice for others that may be looking at this thread for help....in general, always update the ethernet hardware driver directly from the manufacture (if possible) and update Windows to the latest release, then install CNC12 and bench test etc.. see this post. https://centroidcncforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=8880#p8880

Yeah, agreed. The USB worked, but it's going to have more latency and jitter, even if it continues working long-term. Plus, the USB-C connector is going to be much more susceptible to pulling out at a bad time on a real working machine.
