"6" board real?

Post by johannes »

Hi,

I am in the process of switching from my current Buildbotics controller to something with more axis and outputs, and have contemplated the Acorn paired with Clearpath SD servos. However, my current CNC is a router with dual Y motors on the gantry, which uses up 4 motor ports.
My plan was to add a rotary axis, which I cannot do with my Buildbotics controller, but seems like I cannot do with Acorn either.

Someone mentioned on a Discord chat that there is a new board in development, called the "6" ? Is this aimed at the DIY'er in the same way as the Acorn, and in a comparable price range? If so, I'd like to wait for this, since I do like the Acorn concept, and the configurable VCP panel a lot.

if you hardware pair the gantry that free's up the 4th axis for cnc rotary duties. several ways to do this.

AcornSIX is real. fighting supply chain issues for chips for this product, good news is we are winning.
Hardware will be in beta testers hands in 5-6 weeks. fyi... AcornSix price point will be more than double regular Acorn.

Sounds great.
Double regular Acorn still puts it within ballpark of say a fully loaded 5-axis Masso, or other comparable 4+ axis solutions, so I don't necessarily have a problem with that, as long as it doesn't get ridiculous. (I have considered the Oak, but it gets too expensive when you add on the required software upgrades and accessories).

I have "hardware paired" two Clearpath SDSK motor on the Acorn board with no issues. Just make sure you add the resistors for each axis. No need for the C86 board unless you want to add more components to the mix.

Will there be a place to sign up to be a beta tester? I would be interested :)

I have built an ATC system using the AcornSIX control board and it is in testing. Currently we are in waiting for the newly designed board that transitions to the new chip configuration. I believe that it is aimed at the higher end DIY crew looking to replace controllers on commercial machines which are usually more complex than most DIY or hobby machines. Figure the price around double, licenses cost more, and of course, you can add more "goodies" so they cost more.

Being a beta tester costs you TIME and MONEY.
The commitment is very real....(ask several of us how well we know this) That said, those of us who have been long term Beta testers have helped with suggestions and improvements seeing SOME of that come to fruition to make it better is rewarding. Beta testing software means starting from scratch, when we are busy, sometimes 2-3X a week....don't take the responsibility lightly....its not about "FREE" stuff.

Chip shortages stalled several projects (as they have many in the electronics industry)...they will happen after things are worked out.

I have some questions

Is there a compatibility between acorn six and acorn, in the sense of physical reconnection, more specifically can the motor drivers be reconnected in the same way?

Will it have an encoder input?

Will it have more inputs/outputs?

Will it use the same beaglebone green, and only the integrated circuit will be changed?

Will it use another type of beaglebone?

Will it have to connect directly to an MPG or will it be wireless?

Is there a compatibility between acorn six and acorn, in the sense of physical reconnection, more specifically can the motor drivers be reconnected in the same way? < both open collector and 5 vdc TTL are provided to fully support AC drive and Stepper drives, all connections are via screw terminal (no DB25)>

Will it have an encoder input? < it has Three Encoder ports>

Will it have more inputs/outputs? <yes>

Will it use the same beaglebone green, and only the integrated circuit will be changed? <same BBG (or BBB can be used)>

Will it use another type of beaglebone? <no>

Will it have to connect directly to an MPG or will it be wireless? < your choice>

will it support more than 4 axis? It would be neato to have 5 or 6 axis control (i hope thats what the "6" stands for :] )
