Have I screwed up?

Post by grindaur »

I am in the process of converting my Sherline DRO mill to CNC. I presently have another mill setup with a MASSO CNC bespoke version for Sherline. Since this will not do PMW hence my need to convert my manual mill. One of your users had posted he had successfully used the Acorn controller to integrate the laser I am using (a DPSS NdYAG from Endurance) with a Sherline mill. I have ordered it from your Amazon site and it is due to arrive today. Did I screw up? I see mention of an Acorn CNC for lasers, is the PWM not present on all Acorn controllers?

PWM is available on all Acorns produced in the last year or so. If you just purchased it, yours will have it.

I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are where they should be.

If another user successfully used the laser you got, best you get with him and ask for a schematic.
When user's successfully test and get a new laser going, its always nice that they post a fresh report and a schematic as to how they hooked it up for other users and for Centroid to consider creating and including a schematic.

You have a couple of laser schematics to reference otherwise. A link can be found in the All Acorn Documents post here:

The weekend was a one step forward one step back, received all of the parts on order, went to local computer restorer and got case to start installing the electronics in. Mounted the stepper drives, and bought two computers (first did not work for talking to the controller, so bought a second). It helps if you read all of the requirements for the computer before buying, missed the note that controller will not run with a USB to Ethernet connection (even USB 3 as I found out). So I have a very nice notebook and a desktop computer to go with my nice notebook I already owned. Now have the computer talking to the controller, the stepper drivers have been wired to the controller, next is to make extension cables for the steppers, checkout of the wiring and the controller, and with luck by weekend power on laser tryout.

I am excited to be nearing the power on point. Still have to noodle out PWM wiring to the laser, and making mounts for the limit switches, it has been fun, but with buying two computers not as cost effective as I had hoped.
