Bill, its all about your budget, what the machine can tolerate as far as rapids, and your end game.
These day's closed loop steppers have become more affordable. I don't use open loop steppers any more.
Closed loop steppers have an encoder and the motor position is monitored by the axis motor drive. The drive receives pulses from Acorn and commands the motor to turn the proper number of steps and watches the encoder to ensure it is in position. This is a hybrid closed loop system.
There are many vendors that sell them. John at automationtechnologiesinc.com sells these and I have used them on Emco PC5 CNC lathes and they work very well:

Gecko G540 will be a more robust drive and cost you about the same as two of the above motors. So if I were presented with the choice, I would take the closed loop stepper motors.
There are other vendors of those hybrid closed loop drives/motors. I prefer to use vendors I can work with should there be any issues down the road.
You should contact Sherline and present your video to them so they can see the performance of their "drive box" you must also provide your min and max jog rate speeds you have programmed. Also ask them what they feel is a reasonable MAX jog rate for that machine. (engineering design question, how much can the machine take mechanically)

Ive been thinking about building a 2nd Acorn control for the Sherline mill which Im setting up for really simple 2nd ops 4th axis work for the turned parts I need to make. SO instead of going with all the same stuff for the mill, I use the existing Lathe driver box on the mill. The lathe is way more important for my overall shop setup and the parts I need to make. I now have a Tormach 1100M that will be the workhouse for my millwork.

I think what I may end up doing is swap out the standard steppers from the lathe and build out a new system with the closed-loop steppers like you guys are suggesting. Im actually pleasantly surprised at the cost. Before I pull the trigger on this I need to get a bit farther down the road to see if I really need to go this route. The lathe may work out for me as is, its just my experience level at this point. need to learn the limitations of the machine and really get a handle on the CAM side and setup.
Since its kind of a waste to buy the Gecko G540 for a lathe since I only need 2 axes what are my options for just 2 drives? How bout cost on power supply?

Yes, I turned him onto those.
Used them on several Emco PC5 builds.
They seem to be holding up well.
