Probe gets to one end and just stays and moves up and down

Doing a surface digitizing. The probe will go across the object and come back (zig zag pattern selected) However every other time it goes back and forth at one end it will stay in one spot and just go up and down like very small, maybe 1/64" and keep doing that until I have to touch the probe and then it wakes up, continues and keeps going. Until it goes another two back and forth and does the same thing again.
