redbrewsathome wrote: Tue Jan 04, 2022 6:03 pm We have been using an acorn for almost a year on a router and love it, out of the blue last Saturday all the relays on the expansion board came on(turning laser cross, vacuum, dust collection and air on at once!) and the heartbeat went out. Now I can not communicate with acorn or do anything, we have checked all wiring and tried power cycling many times to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would have liked to see your control cabinet, and exactly what steps occurred that led up to the malfunction. It is important, the last thing you want is to put in a new Acorn and it happens again. So its best to try and get to the root cause of the problem first.
Basic diagnostics and troubleshooting should happen.

Following this post would be most helpful help provide suggestions.

Centroid will inspect your board and they will be able to determine whether it was a component failure or damage.
My personal experience in 5+ of working with Acorn, is that I have not experienced any Acorn failures because of components on Acorn. I HAVE experienced failures because of self inflicted mishaps. I have also noticed intermittent operational problems by users not following good or proper wiring practices. This is not to say you didn't get an Acorn with a component failure. Electronics components do have a failure rate. Centroid does understand the importance of reliability in machine motion control, so they do their best to source reliable components from reliable sources.

Can you explain what was going on step by step leading up to the failure?

Hey Marty sorry for not posting more pics etc. this thread started after I had no response to email inquiries as to what to look for so I called and was told that the tech did not come to work but would call or email and that I should post a question on the forum to see if anyone can help. That is what I did! The cabinet is in disarray now because I did trace all wires and moved encoder cables and other things to see if anything was damaged, I followed the steps I was told to to diagnose the acorn and bbg and found the bbg would not power up, this no heart beat has happened a half a dozen times this year usually when i change setting in the wizard and are asked to power cycle the acorn sometimes takes three tries for it to have a heart beat again. The bbg going down does not surprise me as we have many bbb. arduino, rpii, and other boards on projects that have had issues like this. Asking for an rma# was what I was told to do if the bbg would not power up so I did. attached is a pic of a torn apart cabinet from tracing problems as you refer to. I'm not trying to seek free parts but if it is warrantied obviously that would be great, I just want this fixed asap.

As for step by step leading up to the failure, we cut parts on friday and on saturday plugged the machine in and the bbg would not power up!

P.S. following that forum link to posting is great, maybe the people answering the support line and telling people to post questions could give out that link, would greatly speed this up!

I don't think it's Acorn. If something is misworded and voltage in a pin there shouldn't be, BBG will shut down.
I'm sorry to disagree with your statement that is a norm for you. It is not, and won't provided the control was wired with good wiring practice in mind.

I would have told you to remove Acorn, go back to the bench test. Acorn, the power supply that came with Acorn and the Ethernet cable that came with Acorn and test it. Let it run, watch the error logs.

I would have like to have seen a report. The latest would be in the report backup folder in the CNCM directory of the cncpc.
I generally ask for one, I forgot to ask you for one.

Thank you Marty, I wasn't saying its a norm just saying i had seen development boards die, when I said I followed the steps, they were the steps on the Centroid beagle bone debricker page, as advised by the first reply from cnckeith, acorn was on bench nothing plugged in no heartbeat, when ethernet cable plugged in there is no communication, when bbg is off the acorn and powered from usb cable it wont power up

I looked at your report.
One thing you should do is learn how to look at your error logs. F7 Utility, F9 Logs, F1 Errors.
Your error log is completely full of MPU/PC resends
Since you mention your Acorn bricked (No heartbeat) I can only suggest that it was the result of a wiring problem.

Please review your log file attached.

Not sure why that is there it has always been set to 4000 as on the motor controllers

It's in your report which has all the settings from the Wizard. It's in your steps per motor rev values

If you unzip your report file, open the report .txt file and take a look. Within the report.zip file is an other file names urf zip. In it is the msg_log.txt file.
