Delta ASDA-A2 Parameters for Acorn

Post by chronolite »

So I'm retrofitting a fairly new VMC and I did some checklists and tweaked some calculations and took a chance that an Acorn would suffice for this retrofit. Customer didn't even need the retrofit, it's literally a brand new machine, it was setup with Mach 4 and ESS, but he was so pissed at the retailer's customer support attitude that he's yanking it and flew me out to retrofit it. Customer owns a cnc manufacturing company (as in his product is CNC routers), he knows what he's doing. I, however, apparently don't know what I'm doing (my seventh Acorn install) and I need some help.

I download the tech bulletin for configuring delta ASDA-A2 for acorn and I'm stumped right away. First problem is parameters:
** okay **
P01-00 0x0102 Type of pulse
P01-01 0x0100 Precision mode control
P01-40 3000* Motor max commanded RPM. Depends on motor
P01-41 200 Max analog torque command

**not okay**

P01-44 320000 Encoder output pulses**Delta encoder line count. - This is now called "Electronic Gear Ratio Numerator"
P01-45 1024 Centroid pulse ratio. - This is now called "Electronic Gear Ratio Denominator"
>>? 46 - this one is now called pulse number of encoder output, I assume this one is where 44 went.

**ok**
P01-55 3000* Max allowed RPM of motor. Depends on motor

**not okay**
P02-10 0x0101 DIO1 - Drive Enable - this one is now called "DI1 functional planning"
P02-11 0x0000 DIO2 - not used - also functional planning
P02-12 0x0000 DIO2 - not used - also functional planning
P02-13 0x0000 DIO3 - not used - also functional planning
P02-14 0x0102 DIO5 - Reset Servo Drive - also functional planning
P02-15 0x0000 Disable + limit switch - also functional planning
P02-16 0x0000 Disable - limit switch - also functional planning
P02-17 0x0000 Disable EMGS function - also functional planning
P02-22 0x0007 DO5-Motor Alarm Output - also functional planning

**ok**
P02-32 0x0000 Continuous tuning mode
P02-33 0x0000 Semi-auto mode inertia adjustment
P02-47 0x0000 Auto resonance suppression

**not ok**
P02-66 0x0004 Auto-reset undervolt error - now called "special bit register"

So my question is, what are the new parameters for the drive?

Also since it was setup for ESS and Mach4, is it possible that I can just combine the Enable, Step and Direction commons, or will I smoke the drive? Since it's a retrofit, I'm not really able to do this on a bench.

Pictures and Report.zip attached.

Thanks for any help.

attached is a Delta Parameter file from a delta drive configured and running with Acorn. you can open/import this file with deltas software and see the settings.

Okay, I plugged this into the drive and it converted it, and I got an OK! Pretty happy about that, thank you Keith. Now where I'm stumped is wiring. Naturally, the previous wiring isn't like the specifications for Acorn, so I'm wondering if I can jiggle some stuff around without having to make new connectors. The umbilicals from the drives were set up for the ASDA-A2 using
PNP External.png
I understand this as *sourcing*. I have sinking feeling, ahem, that the Centroid provided schematic is sinking the signals and that conversion to sourcing STP, DIR and ENA, will not be likely and that I'll have to re-solder some pins on the umbilical? Is this correct?

I presume that the only way Acorn is going to work with the ASDA-A2 is using this configuration:
NPN External.png
However, this leads me to believe the entire machine retrofit, spindle, tool changer, all the limits and homing, plus all the buttons and all that are going to be sourcing, and acorn is sinking, will I be chasing these problems the entire project? Is there a way to do this sinking/sourcing switcharoo?

wire it like this,
https://www.centroidcnc.com/dealersuppo ... 967.r3.pdf

and choose Delta ASDA in the Acorn setup Wizard under "Axis Drive Type" and click "Load Drive"

Awesome, that kinda works! I get a drive fault after about an inch of movement and it resets just fine, but I'm showing a large error accumulation on the drive. I think I need to do the autotune?

This is problematic. It seems that Delta updated ASDA_Soft to version 5 and TB303 is no longer accurate. Mostly the SET-J is missing. I run the rest of the other steps, but it still sends the drive fault to Acorn after reboot. Is there an update to TB303? I am using Rev1.

Found an old copy of ASDA_Soft (v 4.08.09) and it had the Set J function. However, I do the tuning and I still get a drive fault after about an inch of travel. (The drive moves smoothly through the full range using the ASDA_Soft jog commands)

glad you got it, the deltas run great with Acorn, I have them running at 400,000 step frequency on a big router.

post some photos of the machine we'd all like to see it, and what do you plan on making with it?
