Re: upgrade lathe
Not enough information. At the very least it would be most helpful to quote the specs of your lathe and what you are looking to do.

Re: upgrade lathe
I would like to mount the Acorn CNC Controller
But I do not know:
what stepper motors to use
what motor drivers to use
what sensors
I will look at the look of the machine until the end

Re: upgrade lathe
That is a manual lathe.
To get any kind of accuracy, you would need to upgrade it to ballscrews. That entails making mounts, installing angular contact bearings etc. Along with fitting the correct size motors.
I never recommend converting a manual lathe because of all the work it entails

I second that even though I have done one! (it was not easy)martyscncgarage wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 12:46 pm That is a manual lathe.

Not all lathes have enough room under the cross slide to replace the lead screw with a ball nut and and ball screw!

Re: upgrade lathe
I have three converted Hardinge tool room lathes - well worth the CNC conversion. If the ballscrews cost more than the lathe, probably not worth doing. Gearhead lathes add some complexity but can be managed.
If you do proceed, I'd look at 750W-1KW motors and drives. 5Hp+ spindle motor and VFD. Figure out if it's worth the ballscrew conversion, and design the screw mounting and motor mounts. If that all fits then worry about the little stuff like sensors etc.

Re: upgrade lathe
The question to ask the original poster (which we do not know) if he understands the mechanics involved and the machining involved to do the project correctly.
What kind of spindle speeds is the lathe capable of and what kind of work he hopes to do on it.
