Controller enclosure box

Post by BillB »

Hey all looking for some suggestions for an enclosure box for the Acorn board, power supply, and the expansion thing I cant remember the name right now. My set up is with a Sherline chucker lathe and 5400 mill. I will be using a Sherline driver box witch is already fully enclosed.

How big of a box do I need and IF I decide later on I want to add some peripherals would I mount the relays inside this box? Also, Dose, this box need a fan for cooling?

When you do your bench test. Lay out your parts and mock up the back panel with all your components and measure. Add 20% (More if you think you plan to add to it.

Yes, you should ensure there is air movement through the cabinet. One fan to suck or blow air and an equivalent vent hole for it to pass through at the other end of the box. It makes sense to move the air from bottom to top, fit filters to keep dust and chips out and avoid the risk of coolant getting in (fit vents on sides of cabinet, not top).

On one of my machines, I have a room thermostat set at "max" (around 40C / 100F) mounted inside the top of the cabinet so that the fan only comes on when the drives are generating heat. This keeps the noise down.

Base it on your cabinet supply voltage. If 110v, use 110v fan. Buy one with ball bearings. I blow IN to the cabinet via a filter. I use an electrical cabinet louver with aluminum screen door screen behind it to help make sure no large stringy chips make their way into the cabinet
