You could have gotten by with one contactor. I don't like DMM's suggested wiring example. My opinion, it's overkill Unless you have very large servos.

Is Centroid going to make an updated DMM Schematic for DMM install. I'm about to start wiring tomorrow

No,
Centroid only provides sample axis drive diagrams.
The DMM Dyn4 diagram they have works if you follow it.
There is a "TYPICAL" GENERAL SYSTEM Schematic provided as an example that everyone should follow at least on larger machines. (I use Estop contactors on all my builds, and the Estop wiring circuit)

DMM drives being 5V logic work on the DB25 as well, Some have said they work better on the DB25. You have to either not use an enable circuit or you have to route the enable to the header if you want to use it. DYN2/DYN4 are enable by default and don't NEED the enable. Dyn4 can be set to REQUIRE the enable to enable the drive (Best practice)

Note: DMM does sell a DB25 cable for their drives. It uses 24VDC. Under the DB25 hood, you will find a voltage dropping resistor that drops the 24VDC to about 5VDC. (This is not uncommon, many drive manufacturers use 5VDC logic, and suggest using dropping resistors) That said, Centroid has always recommended that if the drive uses 5VDC logic for step and direction, it should be wired to the DB25. The resistor can be removed and bridged so that you can use the cable with 5VDC logic.

The biggest thing I see is people failing to to bench test Acorn first per the new installation manual
viewtopic.php?f=60&t=5991

And then connect ONE Axis drive and ONE motor to Acorn and get the motor running. Then connect the remaining drives and motors and run them on the bench. When on the bench you can also do a mock layout to determine how large a cabinet you will need. (Foot print)
Next step is to go ahead and wire the back panel. A sheet of aluminum is great. Mount and wire everything and the RETEST the assembly before putting it in the cabinet. Its easier to trouble shoot things in this manner. Also, check your Error logs as you are testing from first step to last step to check for MPU/PC Resends. F7 Utility, F9 Logs, F1 Errors. These errors are usually the result of poor wiring practices or a component that is emitting a lot of EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) It needs to be addressed. This is also easier to track down as you start at basic bench test and progress through the build process. Because you will have an idea what you may have done last that might be attributed to the Errors.

Attached is the DYN4 and system schematic for reference. It is up to the system integrator to create their own schematic when the project is complete. At least print a full size system schematic and mark it up with a red pen.

Good luck!
Marty

Tonight we pulled acorn and a single drive out of the cabinet and started bench testing from scratch.

-The drive/motor bench tested fine with rs232 cable (then set to step-direction, and saved to drive)

-Acorn bench tested fine with the computer (ie dro values could be controlled with jog buttons in cnc12 with no motor hooked up)

- The motor still goes screwy as soon as its connected to acorn.

Please see attached pics of our wiring set up.
Please see attached fresh report while bench testing motor.

One potentially important discovery was that the mouse pad on my laptop stopped working properly as soon as we power up acorn/drive. I'm using the Centroid provided shielded Ethernet cable. We separated any wires from the ethernet cable and I held the laptop away from any conductive surfaces. It seems like we have significant electrical interference somehow. Again, see pics of our wiring set up. See also new youtube video

Any ideas? I'm going to pick up another (shielded) ethernet cable tomorrow in case this ones defective, past that??...

LAPTOPS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED for use with CNC12. Find an inexpensive desktop PC meeting the minimum performance requirements
I am not surprised that the motor starts to oscillate when you force it with your fingers. If the motor turns smoothly back and forth and holds position without touching it, that is a good sign. (The servo needs to be tuned to the load it is attached to)
It appears you are using DMM's DYN4 to Acorn Cable. If you take the hood off the DB25 connector, you will see a PC board, with a resistor on it. That is a voltage dropping resistor. It drops the 24VDC to 5vdc for +Pul and +Dir.
Are you looking at your logs? F7 Utility F9 Logs, F1 Errors?
This is your log from yesterday, note early on there are no PC/MPU Resends:

Re: Trouble getting servo motor movement (DMM DYN4)

Post by P Cook »

We are back at this today, still having the same issues.
To answer previous questions, Yes I'm using DMM supplied db25 cables.
I am aware laptops are NOT recommended for CNC use (due to power saving modes potentially crashing the system). However, This laptop meets all Centroid requirements for running CNC12 and we haven't run this thing long enough to have a power saving issue come up so I'm sot sure why this point is pertinent to my issues. Non the less, we tested with a desk top pc and had the same issues.

At that point (july) I ordered a new acorn board from Centroid and new cables from DMM hoping the issue was in either the acorn its self or in the db25 cables.

Today we un-boxed and bench tested the NEW acorn and NEW cables and have the same results. Here is a video showing what we have.

We have 110v to the NEW power supply, power supply to acorn, 110v to drive and the drive hooked is up to motor/encoder. The acorn is hooked up to the drive. There is NO computer in this equation. On power up, acorn causes motor to spin erratically. putting voltage meter on acorn shows accompanying erratic voltage readings.

If we disconnect acorn and connect drive-computer via rs232 (changing drive control to rs232 in parameter settings from step-dir) the drive and motor work fine.

Any ideas? did I get 2 defective acorns in a row or am I doing something very wrong here?

Thank you,
Paul.

I can't get your latest video to work.
Please make sure you get a link from YouTube by clicking on SHARE in YouTube.

Also post a Fresh report.
Please post a DMMDRV screen shot as well.

Close up of your wiring to Acorn.
Many have had better luck using the DB25 and omitting the resistor. Search DYN4 on the forum.

I would build 1 DB25 connector per DMM drawings or inspect one you purchased from them? I can't find the drawing online from DMM for the JP4 port on the servo driver to Acorn? I have a copy in my notes, but I'm not home to scan you a copy. I used Drawing ACORN_rev4, DMM DYN4 SERVO DRIVE with great success. I wonder if the lead you bought from them is wired wrong. I built mine own and have had no issues.
Good luck. Stay after it, you will find the problem.
Respectfully,

Have you made any headway on this problem.

I am new at this and I am in the middle of setting my Acorn for the first time and I appear to be having the exact same problem. It leads me to wander if the DMM DB25 connector cable is wired incorrectly. I will check out the pins on the cables tomorrow to see what I can find out.

I have watched Marty's video in detail and I have thoroughly reviewed my wiring and I have been looking through all the manuals over the past two days with no success. I have one concern in that all my grounds and commons are connected - the main 110volt ground, the 24V ground and all other grounds. Could this be a problem?

You might start a fresh post and always post a fresh report at the very least. Post pictures in your new post showing how you wired the DMM DB25 cable to Acorn.
