VCP design - too much?

I decided to redesign the standard VCP to better suit a particular install, and I may have got carried away.
It's taken quite a bit of work to get it to this point, and I've been looking at it for so long I'm not sure if I like it or not.
Before I hand it over to the machine operator, I'd really appreciate some feedback.

Constructive criticism welcome.

Troy,
I for one, don't think it's "too much". I like the simplicity and the ergonomic layout.

I love the reset button but I'm not a fan of the rest of it. As a CNC router guy it’s not clear to me what many of the buttons do. Any operator would need a guide and training on the buttons. I like buttons with words that clearly say what it does. We each like what we like, yes? That said, you did say you designed it for a specific install and maybe it works for that application. As someone who also spent a lot of time just redoing the stock buttons so they all matched in size, border thickness, font and font size I'm certain you spent A LOT more time on this VCP. For that I applaud you. Again, the reset button is beautiful. It's great to know that the VCP is very flexible now and can be manipulated to suit almost any design.

Hi cool.

the reset button is not an estop, please don't emulate an estop button as that is a safety concern.

also, spindle is missing the Auto/Manual mode selection? or is that the blue finger button? same with vac on/off missing the auto/man?

Thanks everyone for the feedback - much appreciated.

  • that's a fair point regarding the reset button not being an estop. I've changed the button colours to remedy this.
  • the blue 'cog/hand' button is the spindle Auto/Manual mode selector.
  • a vacuum auto/manual button is not required with this setup.

I've attached the report for this VCP, in case anyone wants to borrow from it.

Honestly I find it low on the legibility scale, partially because of the low contrast in some places, and also because of the gradients that "fade" the button into the background.
Also the "vacuum on" button is probably a finger width from the "play" button, which seems dangerous for an industrial control, but I don't know how big your screen is, whether it's a touch screen, etc.

All of that said, it's your machine and you're the only person who has to like it! If others are using this I might reconsider (if you run a shop, etc). But if you find this more usable or enjoyable or safer than the default, more power to you! Thanks for sharing either way.
