Gremlins

Post by Gmachine »

Could some one please help me?
I am having some issues with Gremlins after a year and the new update 12_v4.64. I have tried all I know to troubleshoot. I switched drives, steppers, cables, triple checked all wiring, checked for ground interference, etc.

I have attached a link to my google drive with the following:

-A current report zip file
-Videos of machine running before update
-Video title Gremlins to show issues
-Screen shots of settings
-Pictures of steppers
-Pictures of Novotech drives and wiring
-PDF of drives
-PDF of current Acorn CNC wiring diagram I followed

If I need more detail please let me know and I will include it in a follow up post with a link to my google drive.

Drop the step frequency to 100,000 and run the test again.

That was one of the first things I tried with no change. I tried different pulse/rev with no change. Changed step frequency back to 200,000 and pulse/rev back to 2000. I switched the wires from Enable, Pulse, and Direction coming from the acorn x axis to the Y drive. The problem flowed. I am now thinking I have a board issue. I checked the voltage to the board and to the drives again. I notices the board was only getting 22.5 volts so I adjusted it to 23.9vdc.

Questions:

How many amps does the board require?
Do you think I could have too much demand on the 1amp power supply that came with the board?
Should I run a separated 24vdc to the boards inputs to reduce the draw on the 1 amp supply that the board uses?

Currently I am using the 1amp 24vdc supply for the 24vdc to the board, home switches(400ma max), the Enable, Pulse, and Direction of all drives(64ma for all 4 drives).

The last thing I did today was to reload my drives with the backups I made one year ago. Ran my test and WTF. Everything started working as if nothing happened. No runaway stepper or lost steps from any of the drives. I will test it more this week and report.

I fear if the Gremlins return I will need instructions for sending the board for repair.

Ok I went out after work and started up my machine. Everything ran as it should so I rehomed machine. I made a fresh report at 5:42pm. I ran my Z screw comp program twice. Then ran my x screw comp program twice. On the way back to x 0.0 the second time the Gremlins returned. I immediately posted a second report at 6:32pm. I created a google drive file and dump the files in there with video.

Please let me know if you spot one.

Looking at your pictures, I do not see snubbers on the coils of your contactors.
Please POST a link here to your drive manual. If they are 5V logic drives you should be running them on the DB25 not the Acorn headers.
Is that a 48VDC Switching power supply right up against the step and direction cables from the Acorn header up to your drives? Are those cables shielded? Drain wires taken to ONE common ground point?

Just some observations. PLEASE upload a FRESH report here. I can't download it from your google drive.
Marty

OK, I stumbled into the manual for the drive.
You have +24VDC going to the
+Pul
+Dir

and
-Pul to Acorn ST1
-Dir to Acor DR1

Sorry for the wait I just got home from work.

Just wanted to reinforce the fact this worked for the last year with no issues and wiring has not changed. Also the problem is only in X and Z and comes and goes.

I added the manual from factory in attachments. SC8680
I added the last two reports. One with it working fine 5:42pm one with it going nuts 6:32pm.
The drive take 5volts up to 24volts for Pul, Dr, and En. I have 24 + going into Pul and Dir and - pul to acorn St1 and Dr1

I took voltage readings at the acorn St1 Dr1 and noticed when the issue was occurring the voltages were dropping to 16vdc from acorn or going as high as 30 volts.

I will run a set of new wires tomorrow. I though there could be some interference but then why is it just happening to the x and z.

If I switch Dr, Pul, and En from acorn to a different drive the issue follows. I feel like the board is not suppling the correct voltages at the correct times to Dr, Pul, and En.

I can not put all video on the attachment tab.

You have to upload videos to YouTube, mark them as unlisted and get a SHAREable link and post it here.
I can't view your videos.

Can you please explain what you are encountering? Your "Gremlin" issue?
I can't deal with your google drive for information.

Your report isn't glaring really.
