Has anyone found a rotary encoder rated for high rpm?

I've been looking around for an encoder to use on my mill that has an approximate max spindle rpm of 8800 rpm. I've looked at the ebay Omron encoders and it appears they are rated at 6000 rpm, what have you guys used on your mill spindles? I've mostly been searching on ebay for cheap import or used industrial encoders, so far everything I find with an rs422 output signal that uses 5v is in the 5000-6000 rpm range.

I've often wondered if you could drive an encoder with a 1:2 timing puller arrangement so it would run at 1/2 spindle speed. You would get one index pulse every two spindle revolutions, but it would be in the same spindle location each time. You'd need to run a 2000 line encoder to get enough spindle resolution.

That would be pretty slick if that's all you needed to trick acorn into thinking 1:2 = 1:1.
Would that work, for example telling acorn I have a 1000 line encoder when there is actually a 1:2 ratio 2000 line encoder installed?

Haven't actually tried it, but it should work.

Quantum Devices QM35 is one option. It is a modular, so you would also have to design a precise mount that can handle high RPM.

I just picked up an OMRON E6B2-CWZ1X from Ebay yesterday that I'm going to try. It's a 1000P/R and rated for 6000RPM.

Thank you, I'll look into those. I sent them a message about their rpm ratings and output signal to clear up some of my understandings. Have you used these on a Centroid before?

We used this model on one machine. We use other models in more volume (QR12, QD200). Because of the reliability of the other models, I do not hesitate to also recommend QM35.
