Shuttle Express & Feed Hold problems

Post by Chris D »

Good morning all,

I am having problems with the Shuttle Express and the Feed Hold Button (along with a few other things too but saving that for a different discussion).

I recently added physical Cycle start and Feed Hold buttons, configured both with the Wizard, verified both switches work by looking at the I/O screen. The cycle start button works as expected (although I do not think the VCP button works anymore). The Feed Hold button does not work in either location, physical button or VCP. I have done NO DIRECT PLC EDITING, only changes using the wizard.

I have a shuttle express on the machine and that was working fine up until recently. It still works fine to jog etc, however, when I turn it off and try to do anything else with the Acorn control, I get a error complaining about a "tool file open" or similar alarm. Sorry, I didn't write it down, if needed I can provide the exact wording. When that error comes up, I can't find a way to clear the error so I can use the control so I have to exit CNC12 and restart it every time I use the Shuttle Express. My best guess is that this problem came up after I added the Cycle Start and Feed Hold buttons as that is when I noticed the problem.

Attached is the report file (I hope)
Any help would be appreciated.

Chris D

Does your external feed hold button have a normally-open contact, or a normally-closed contact?

The standard PLC logic for "FeedHold2" requires a normally-open contact (on the Alt-i screen it should be red when idle, green when the button is pressed). If you have a normally-closed contact (as is commonly supplied with red buttons) you can invert the input using Ctrl-Alt-i.

The Feed Hold button is wired the same and configured the same as the Cycle Start button which works. The I/O monitor also indicates that they are operating the same.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hi Keith, thanks for responding.

I suppose that is correct, I am configuring and setting up the machine so there are lot's of things that have happened during that time frame. What were you expecting to see? Should I get the machine into the condition where that alarm is showing and then do the report at that moment? If the machine is in that state, I may not be able to do anything without exiting and restarting the software.

looks like files got moved or corruption issues etc...

the error message is saying it can't find the g code file, was it on a usb drive? if so, always copy from usb drive to cncm\ncfiles then load the file.

CNC programs were copied to the cncm\ncfiles directory from a USB. Offset and Tool libraries files have not been copied, moved, edited or otherwise touched by me outside of the CNC 12 software.

Could it be that I am using the shuttle incorrectly? Am I suppose to turn it off after making my jog moves and before doing anything else with the CNC12 software?

You found this video correct?:

Document:

Are you modifying the personality file trying to do something else?

PLEASE post a FRESH report as well.

Yes I watched the video and read the document and I had the shuttle express working fine. I don't even know what the "personality file" is or where I could find it - so no, I did not edit it. I have been in and out of the Wizard dozens of times and I have done extensive work with the VCP files and macros etc.

I obviously messed up a couple of things: Feed Hold not working at all and the file open issue after the usage of the shuttle express.

I will ask the question again, should I get the machine into a state where those alarms are on screen then do the report or just run another report? Running a Fresh report at this time will probably just show more of the errors and faults as was in the last report.

Thanks for diving in, I really appreciate the help!
