You are talking about achieving a recommended surface speed at the cutter somewhere in a range of 2 or 3 to 1. Many VFDs can be set up to compensate for slip frequency so that the spindle barely slows under load - if you continue to believe that's critical.
My thinking is that I need an encoder to use the "closed loop vector" option and the reason to use that option is to get full torque at speeds down to 100 rpm. There may be a way to get the missing torque with open loop but I haven't pushed the right buttons (that is set parameters...)
The question I have asked is "do I need to run the spindle in reverse...?" The only reason I can think of is for rigid tapping... when you say deadly accurate I'm assuming you're talking speed.
This week I will do whatever I can to improve the spindle torque as I anxiously await Acorns and DMMs and a new computer...

If I was going to look at VFDs what would you suggest for running single phase 220.
Motor info The Motor is a General Numerics maybe a bit unusual
  • 2.2 KW continuous 3.7KW 15 minutes
    11amp Continuous 15 amp - 15 minutes
    1500-8000 RPM
    3 phase
    4 pole
    Volts 200
    Type A06B-1002-B600 #2000
I'll be reviewing the current parameters on the Unidrive 2203 and adding the encoder to switch over to closed loop vector but in the effort to reduce voltages it would be easier to run single phase. The DMMs can take 3 phase and may get some slight performance enhancement but my current plan is to run them of of two legs...

You have a 5hp spindle motor. Its tough to find a 5hp rated VFD that will run single phase.
Most popular is the Yaskawa V1000
Automation Direct GS4

Cheapest and bottom of the line, Huan Yang 10HP GT series VFD. You MUST specify you want the braking resistor circuitry and resistor at time of order.
Huan Yang sells on Amazon under HY Electrical. There ARE Chinese knock offs of this VFD.

IT is also possible to find a 10hp VFD and run it on single phase, but you will have to do your research on that one.

I would rather see you spend the money on a better VFD

One of the reasons I would like to use 220 single phase is to reduce the number of voltages coming into the cabinet. The VFD may be in round two as I have a rotary converter - it's just noisey.
What I'm hearing is that if you get a higher HP VFD it would be work on a 5HP motor...
Acorn will be here tomorrow...

Here is what I'm starting with...for those that like pictures. The original retrofit is bare bones and the current attempt is to get back to a system that is closer to industrial quality.

Re: Retrofit 2.0 TREE J325>>Power Supplies

Post by lavrgs »

I'm thinking about power supply requirements; The Acorn comes with a PS that provides 5vdc and 24vdc. I expect the 24 vdc can be used to supply contactors - I would like to know if there is a limit to how many. Should I expect to need dedicated power supply? What about 5vdc. I don't know what needs 5vdc or 12vdc for that matter. I am trying to kee p the number of voltages to a minimum.
I also want to know if there is a terminal block maker that is preferred - I bought some Dinkle blocks as a start...

The power supply that comes with Acorn is ONLY to be used for Acorn logic. Not contactors. Supply your own power supply for those.

Please spend time studying the Acorn system schematic, if you want to do it right.

Is the Acorn system schematic online or does it come with the Acorn? The docs I downloaded do not have that specific name/file
Power supplies ordered.
Does the Acorn have a similar item like the relay board to mount to DIN rails? Same question about the power supply?

Acorn Bench Test was successful, update to Pro software and now...I have an area that I was going to bench test all the new stuff but, l I may move everything closer to the mill and try spinning the existing motors. In reality I have so many things to do that I should probably focus on cleaning things up. Then I could remove the old servos and test them under more ideal conditions...talked myself into that..!
