Milling Issue

Hi, I have changed to the most recent CNC12, brand new NUC and getting some odd behavior that I haven't seen in the past

This CNC uses NEMA 34 steppers, the wiring has not changed and I have done dozens of projects, the only delta is moving to the New NUC and to new CNC-12 version

I am doing a simple v-carve lettering and it starts ok then goes sideways(x and y axis, please see photo, it's interesting that the last letter shape seems to be ok in the wrong place

The Display for the Lettering on the console looks completely normal , so either:
1. I'm missing steps for some reason eg I'm missing something in the CNC-12 config
2. There is a mechanical issue at play
3. Windows is messing this up in some way, although I saw no popups etc

This issue does not always occur at the same x/y coordinates, it is at random position and time of milling

Attached is a report, photos and the CNC cut file

I have ensured that all the Axis settings are the same as the older machine and I have not seen this before. I have checked for any restrictions in travel and also ensured that nothing is loose.

Also note that the workpiece was actually screwed down to the table to eliminate the possibility of slipping clamps

You are loosing steps, either from noise, or overdriving the steppers.

You are not providing enough information about your build to be able to give you good suggestions.
As Tom pointed out, you appear to be loosing steps. Can be caused by a myriad of things. Poor choice of drives/motors, components not matched. Feed/speeds not optimal in the G Code.
Closed loop motors/drives are generally a better choice albeit a more expensive one, they will fault if pushed too hard and stop. You might be able to recover from the issue. Where as open loop drives/motors will do what you show. There is no feed back. If the motor stalls a tiny bit with each cut, then you have the artifacts shown.

Provide pictures of your build, pictures of your control cabinet, make and model of your axis drives, make and model of your axis motors, what type of power supply are you using. Links to specifications.

So there could be nothing wrong with the CNC-12 config to cause an issue like this?
I am working on getting the info for the system, but note that the only delta is the new NUC and CNC12 software and the rest of the electronics and hardware have been working flawlessly for years , I only upgraded the to the NUC because I was told I needed to in order to get support.
I thought it this could be a programming issue, but I think you are saying it couldn't be.

This has been a WORKING Acorn System before hand? Missed that in your post.

Please post a report from the old CNC12 computer. I would copy the CNCM directory from the old computer on to a USB drive as well.

Still need other pertinent information about your system.

Please describe exactly what you did to upgrade the computer? Do you still have the OLD computer with CNC12 on it and what version of CNC12 were you using.

Is the cabinet the same as before? Did you change or add any wiring. Moving wires around can cause EMI that was not noticed before. Are your rapid feedrates the same as before? Are your axis accelerations the same as before? Either or both of those can cause the motors to overdrive and loose steps.

Your log file also indicates some Ethernet communication errors and resend requests. These could also be indicative of a noisy electrical cabinet. Are you using a shielded Ethernet cable?

All,
I am working of creating a complete info package to send including
Wiring Diagram
Pictures of the issue and the CNC machine
Specs for components
dip switch settings for stepper drivers
report file
report from the old machine

I will post this all at once within a couple of days so everything is in one place


Some facts:

This is a homebuilt CNC with a Greenbull Kit from BuildYourCNC

Control Cabinet is the same, its a server cabinet with a steel top , wiring is the same, cabinet is cooled with 6 DC fans

Ethernet cable is shielded

I am using NEMA 34 steppers that have a current rating at 5.5A, I am using CW6080 stepper drivers for all 3 axes

Currently I have an 8.8 A 320 36 volt power supply that supplies all 3 stepper drivers has been enough for 3 years but perhaps marginal?

I think I was connected to the internet when the runs were made, but I don't think this should make a difference since I hope the Acorn is doing the motion control independently of the PC, with the PC just running user control.
Central dust collection was off when the problem happened, and no other shop tools were run while the CNC was cutting.

I've checked every set screw on the machine and ensured that there is nothing loose.

I believe the issue is electrical control or power at this point

I ordered 2 more 350W 36V supplies today so I will have plenty of power for each axis, and this will eliminate any possible current issues, to be on the safe side, although the lost steps issue is new since the upgrade.

Please provide the cut sheet for your stepper motors.....or a link to the documentation.

Is that a CW6080 or 8060? Manual please?
Will await more information.
