Unable to Get Stepper to Move

Post by slice »

I have bench tested my Acorn according to the video and everything appears ok.
I moved on to bench testing one axis and I'm not getting the stepper motor to rotate.
I have a Automation Technologies KL2100-50-4BC motor, a KL-5056e drive, and a KL-1000-48 48vdc supply. All from Automation Technologies.
I may not have my Wizard set properly. I have set for screw terminal bench test. Motor appears to be "braked".
I do have a heart beat.
Wiring is as follows
Drive A+ to pin 1 on motor connector
Drive A- to pin 2 on motor connector
Drive B+ to pin 3 on motor connector
Drive B- to pin 4 on motor connector
Drive +V to POS(+) KL-1000-48
Drive GND to NEG(-) KL-1000-48
Drive PUL+ to +24vdc
Drive PUL- to Acorn ST1
Drive DIR+ to +24vdc
Drive DIR- to Acorn DR1
Drive ENA+ no connection (I have also wired this to +24vdc)
Drive ENA- no connection (I have also wired this to EN1)
Com from Acorn auxiliary to Acorn COM next to EN1
My e-stop is working according to CNC12
+24vdc from Acorn auxiliary to Acorn 24IN
I am using the shielded ethernet cable

Motor Wiring from website
Wiring:

Pin1 to A+
Pin2 to A-
Pin3 to B+
Pin4 to B-

You should be using the DB25 with a DB25 MALE breakout board for those drives.
Your KL-8070 does not say you can use +24V

If you really want to *TRY* the headers try this:
FROM the Acorn Power supply +5VDC terminal, connect it to:
+PUL
+DIR

Then take
-PUL to ST1
-DIR to DR1

DO NOT HOOK UP THE ENABLE AT THIS TIME. When you power up the drive and the motor power supply, your stepper shaft should be locked and holding.
Try this and report back.

That did the trick. Take the rest of the day off with pay!

I don't get paid, and when I have the time, at least once a day, I visit the forums as I have time. Glad you have movement

When you hook up the enable, same way, +5V to ENA+ and ENA- to EN1
You may have to go into the Wizard ADVANCED tab and INVERT the ENABLE by checking the box.

Your drives are ENABLED by default, when Acorn ENABLES them, its actually DISABLING them. Rotors will be unlocked.

As a general rule, you should use the DB25 for 5VDC Logic drives.

I will get a DB25. The Acorn must produce the 5vdc. Correct?

I figured you didn't get paid. I thank you for taking the time to check in and help out us newbies.

Think of the Acorn DB25 like a PC parallel port. Yes, you will connect +pul to Step1, +dir to Dir1 and take the -pul, -dir to the DB25 COM.
If the machine is small, you may not have to worry about the enables.
You could continue on using the header and see how it works for you.

The machine is a PM25-MV. I will continue to use the header and see how everything goes as I continue. I am only bench testing now and then will build cabinet. My mill is ordered but not scheduled to arrive until end of May or first of June.

Plenty of tinker time.....just leave room to connect the breakout board if needed

Will do. I do have a nice wiring diagram drawn if it's of any interest to add to the library. For the screw terminals, the COM next to the EN1,2,3,4 isn't used? Is there any documentation that talks about each input/output on the Acorn board? I have the schematics but that doesn't go into much detail. It would be nice to now say the difference between the ST1,DIR1, EN1 at the screw terminals vs the header. Maybe they are the same???

We are working on a basic Acorn install manual
Headers SINK the signal. That's why you supply +5VDC to the drive +Pul and the +Dir and then take the -Pul to ST1 and -Dir to DR1
The DB25 Step and Dir signals PROVIDE the +5V so that's why you connect them to the drive +Pul and +Dir

On inputs, they STAND at 24VDC(Don't forget the jumper from the spare +24VDC terminal on the Acorn power input) around to EITHER (they are connected) +24VDC terminal to the LEFT in the INPUT terminals. You must SINK that +24VDC input to Acorn COM to activate them.
SO, if you use proximity sensors, make sure you by NPN sensors NOT PNP.

Output relays are dry contacts. Just be mindful of the load you are connecting to them

Acorn spec manual can be found here:
https://centroidcnc.com/centroid_diy/do ... manual.pdf

If you use a spindle encoder, it must be +5VDC LINE DRIVER/DIFFERENTIAL. You will have to make your own cable. You CAN buy an encoder and cable made up from Centroid. Watch the specs on the encoder (Max RPM) vs. your spindle RPM. A 1000 line encoder is usually sufficient. Encoders MUST be belted to the spindle at 1:1 with a timing belt if used.
