Z Axis Plunging too Deep into part < part zero, tool offsets, turns ratio >

I have an issue that i am running into with the Z axis running too far into the part. I recently bought the acorn board from centroid and converted my pm25 matthews to CNC. I am using Stepperonline motors and drivers. A NEMA 34 on the Z and NEMA 24's on the X and Y axes. The problem I am having is that the Z axis seems to have a mind of its own and sometimes will plunge way into the part and other times it will appraoch fast and then comes almost to a stop before it plunges into the part as it should. I believe i set everything up correct as far as tools are concerned and the part. So for the tools I changed parameter 3 to a 2.0, which set the Z REF to home. I then have six tools that I set up and toched off a 123 block off the top of the x table top- so the tools are all reference from the home position. I put a part in the vise and went to part setup and brought the tool down to the middle of the part (in this case) and let x, y, and z all be 0, and set the tool to the proper # in the z. I try to run the part and as I was saying it plunges way into the part (noramlly) sometimes it does the right thing. I have tried shoutting everything down and re-running and i don't think it makes a difference. I am using wood right now as it is forgiving , but am afraid to use steel or aluminum as I never know what the z axis is going to do.

Forgot to add that the tool is supposed to practically stop about .1" before the top of the part and then slowly enter the part. It has done this for me as it is sipposed to- but it noramlly plunges way into the part. I have had settings of .25" total depth on say a pocket and the tool may plunge in .300 or even more?

Hi, we'll try and provide suggestions if you would be so kind as to follow the instructions in the post:

We can't "See" what you "See".
It sounds to me like you may not be setting your tools up correctly.
Please take the time to watch this Centroid Mill Training Video:

Its well worth an hour of your time.

Next, check out the Mill Operator's Manual:

Next, post the G code of program giving you trouble. Maybe we can take a look at it.

Lastly, I looked at your Errors log (F7 Utilities, F9 Logs, F1 Errors)
I see some Ethernet PC/MPU Resends, you should look to see why you are getting those usually caused by Interference, VFD wiring, ground loops:

Just some things to get you started in looking at and providing us some more information. Please take a picture of your control cabinet and post here. Did you use shielded VFD cable from your VFD (assuming you are using a VFD) to your spindle motor? How is the shield grounded. (Just guesses here....)

Also, always press F8 GRAPH before you run the program. CNC12 will read through the entire program, compare it to how you have your Part Zeros set and tell you if you have any errors. Don't run the program if you have errors.

Also common mistake to think about, when you set your Z0 MAKE SURE YOU ENTER THE TOOL NUMBER you are using from your tool library to set the Part Zero.

Again, with out knowing specifics, these are just some general suggestions.

I did the graph F8 and there were no errors. Program runs without any erroRs. Also I watched a video that CNCKEITH did and followed that to do the tool setup. I also did enter the correct tool # when setting the Z0

Just so you know when I do the part setup the X and Y seem to do the right thing . The Z just does not seem to make any sense. I could see it being off a little bit but not this much

When I watched the video that Keith did- he suggested to change parameter 3 to a 2- which makes the z ref home. I then set up my tools using a 123 block off of the x table- and the numbers appear to make sense to me.

I do not have a vfd and the mill is started and stop by the hardware that came with the mill- it is independent of the acorn controller

Also, I want to make sure my axis are moving correctly- not very experienced with any of this so bear with me.

My x axis (the mill table) moves to the right when i click X- on the virtual panel
y axis (the mill table) moves toward me when Im standing in front of the mill when I click the Y + on the virtual panel
and when I click Z+ the mast moves up and when I click Z- the mast moves down
