Closed loop stepper driver compatibility

Post by terbospaghetti »

As far as I understand, having a stepper driver that is closed-loop is the only way to achieve closed-loop operation with an acorn cnc board.

Are there any recommended drivers? I don't know what I need, if I'm honest. Would the controller packaged with a 3.5nm closed-loop stepper on ebay be fine? Or are there quality/compatibility issues?

Specifically, I'm interested in trying the following driver:

I know it says it's for 3d printers, but I don't think that's a hard & fast rule. If my steppers are 3.3A or less, these oughta do the trick, right??

Closed loop steppers (or servos) that take step and direction (which is what Acorn produces for motion) are closed loop between the motor and drive. It’s open loop between Acorn and the drive.

If you want closed loop hybrid system, you buy the motor and the drive as a matched pair or designed to work with each other.

I would steer clear of any seller on Ebay that is not based in the U.S. in case you need support. Automationtechnologiesinc.com and CNC4PC.com are two examples. Teknic is also based in the use and builds brushless drive/motor combination. Search Clearpath SDSK.
DMM Technologies is based out of Canada but gives reasonable support for their AC servo systems.
