little machine shop 7 x 16 lathe conversion

Post by LMSCNC »

Greetings everyone,

I have a LMS 7 x 16 lathe that i am starting to convert to cnc using centroid acorn board and software. I was just curious if anyone have done this type of conversion on this type of lathe before as i could use all the help i can get lol.

Thanks
Dave

Welcome!
This fellow did something similar. Here is a link to ONE of his videos in his series. It will give you and idea what you are getting yourself into as far as the mechanics.
We'll be here to help with suggestions with respect to Acorn.

Hi All,

i have just completed installing my kit for the motors.
lathe 2.jpeg
lathe 1.jpeg
i should be receiving the centroid acorn board and software today along with the cnc computer. i want to go with clearpath motors (NEMA23) but could use some help on choosing which motors to get. i am thinking about this one (CPM-SDSK-2311S-RLN) but still not 100% sure. anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

As for sizing Clearpath SDSK. Look on line to see other similar sized conversions and try and find out what size motors they used.
With that, you can call TekNic and ask for an Applications Engineer to help provide suggestions
Make sure you have the following information ready:
Type of machine
Type of ways (Friction in your case)
Pitch of the ballscrews
What kind of reduction ratio between the axis motor and the ballscrews
Are you going to use TekNic's power supply or your own toroidal power supply and what voltage.

If you go the Clearpath route, you might look at CNC4PC.com's C86ACCP interface board between Acorn and Clearpath SDSK servos.

Continued luck on your project!

Hi Marty,

looking online there is not many conversions similar to the size I am doing other than the Video you posted back in Dec. I will go look at his videos later to try and find out what motors he used.

Both axis ballscrews are a 1204mm which means 12mm O.D. and 4mm per 1 revolution or .03937 x 4mm =.1574 per one complete turn on the ballscrew . I can check across of the groove to another and it will be approx the 4mm or the .1574 in inches.

I plan on using TekNic's power supply's and cables. I was also wondering if I could use just 1 power supply for 2 (NEMA23 motors) or if I would need a power supply for each motor?

I do plan on buying the Clearpath servos but would I also need to buy the C86ACCP Clearpath Connector Board for the Acorn Controller or can I get up and running without it?

Thanks
Dave

Are you going to direct drive the ball screws or use a belt reduction?

Hi Marty,

It will be direct drive.

Here is a suggestion:
CPM-SDSK-2311S-RLN to get resolution that is +/- 0.0002" per encoder count. One IPC-5 will run both motors fine. Buy the 10' motor power and signal cables.

Consider CNC4PC.com C86ACCP Acorn interface board for use with Clearpath SDSK

Follow my new build using Clearpath, Acorn, C86ACCP equipment.
