How to connect Plasma torchhight controller?

Post by billthefarmer »

Hi all if anybody can be of assistance it would be much appreciated. I recently purchased the CNC Acorn with the Pro mill software package. When I purchased this I was told that the plasma model was coming soon. I am now at the stage of connecting the PROMA THC COMPACT 150 torch height controller but I cannot find any directions or schematics on how to connect this to the Acorn which is what i need.

I also have a DB 25 terminal block connected. I have noticed when doing searches on Google several other people asking the same question but they also did not get any results as far as I can see. Once again any help much appreciated.

Regards Bill

I think you may have purchased the wrong one.
You want the SD version (Step/Direction)

Before I purchased the THC I contacted the manufacturer told him what I was building and they recommended the compact 150. Also in the many YouTube's I watched in the previous years everybody I found when building using the MACH3 breakout board and software used this particular model. I am not using the hypertherm plasma cutter I will be using a different make I have already modified that to suit the application it's only the signal wires that I'm worried about do I put the direction on the same contacts as the said axis terminals. Also I just googled and found the below link explaining this model can be used with centroid acorn. https://schematron.org/proma-150-wiring-diagram.html the Polish company never mentioned the SD version to me. Can I follow the wiring diagram and terminals used on the Mach3 system. There breakout board costs about $10 from China Centroid is a little bit more expensive that's why I wanted to be sure.
Your comments please. Thanks for your time regards Bill

What are you using to raise and lower the Z axis?

Hi Marty,

I'm not sure what you mean but the z-axis has closed loop stepper motor NMEA34 lifting an element template ballscrew 20 mm. Unless plate is also mounted another sliding plate which holds the normally handheld plasma torch. This plate triggers a microswitch when it is lifting up. I hope this is the sort of information you meant. Regards Bill

Hi Marty,

Yes I realize that but any suggestions you could give on the connection would be very much appreciated no panic I'll get the router version all working first. Thanks again regards Bill

I would review the manual on the Proma SD version. As I understand it, it takes control of the Z axis when you are in plasma mode.
I do not have direct experience with that controller.

Hi Marty,

Yes that is correct it does take control of the z-axis I had no trouble connecting all of the other electronics related to it but I am still not sure where to connect that particular wire to which terminal on the ACORN.
Should I try asking Centroid directly . I tried asking their sales once before and they said put it on the forum. Seeing the now working on plasma software I would have thought that wouldn't be a problem for them to answer.
