Hi all. I am starting conversion of an optiturn 2506v lathe. I have most of the items on order now. I am having some trouble working out what speed controller to use for the spindle. Has anyone else done a conversion of this machine on here.

Please provide details of the machine. Pictures of the current spindle drive, what it is, link to a manual.

Thanks Marty. I shall do that as soon as i get delivery of the lathe. Its currently on backorder.

Hi again. Been doing some research and I am leaning towards the kbsi 240d to control the spindle, or is there an easier way to do this?

Spindle controller looks like a knock off of a KB Electronics KBIC Control. Did you get documentation for it?
You are going to need a KBSI240D at the very least. You need the isolation. Look up the KB120 schematic set in the Acorn Package.
The KBSI240D is not difficult to setup. Follow the directions. BUT you need your documentation. DO NOT expect to retain any original Speed Pots. Let CNC12 control the spindle speed.

If you find the equivalent KB Electronics controller, I would probably use it. Honestly, I personally go with a 3 phase motor and a VFD.....

Buy a good spindle encoder as well if you want to do CSS, rigid tap and threading. 1000line is fine. I have had good luck with those from Automationdirect.com
You want 5VDC Line Driver/Differential. If you can use the cable that comes with it great. If you have to make an extension, use the PROPER type cable.

If you're looking at using a KB speed control for your project, take a look at the KBCC-125R unit. It combines an "anti-plug" reversing relay", a heat Sink and dynamic braking resistor all in one package for 1.5 HP (120v) and 3.0 HP (240v) PM or shunt wound DC motors. I have 2 of I got off ebay for cheap and they're great. I have the KBSI-240D's isolators on both Acorn installations as well.

I never left Marty; I just got distracted for a bit. I had another stroke in February, recovered pretty well in a couple months, went back to work, got real busy there & busy at home making parts for my buddy's company. Between that, a bunch of doctor visits & life in general I haven't touched any fun Acorn stuff lately.

I've been keeping up with you guys on the forum every day though with the hope of staying in touch & getting back to where I left off on my ORAC pretty soon now.

Glad to hear you recovered ok Dickeybird. I ordered the kbsi 240d to begin with. See how that goes for starters. If need be I will look at getting what you recommended.
