Converting Viper VMC-560AP With Acorn. Maybe..

Post by SCT_Orlando »

Hey guys, My name is Tom.

I have a viper V560 sitting at my shop I bought for parts, all wiring was stripped, servo drivers, ect. My other Vipers have no real need for the spares this machine has. So, with that being said. Enter the idea to get it running again with a acorn controller and maybe the servo's it has, or move to a clearpath solution. This will be the start of me documenting all aspects of this mill.

Naturally, If anyone has info regarding some of the hardware this machine has, Please share what you know.

The old controller was based on a Mitsubishi meldas magic 64 (the PC based ISA card) Unit came with an advantec compute card running windows NT (not relevant unless someone needs parts for this old system, I have software and hardware)

Servos are all Mitsubishi
Spindle motor is unknown as of yet
2 speed gearbox
Delta International MR4AK ATC http://www.deta.com.tw/product/vertical/40_disk_type
Z axis servo is Mitsubishi Type HA100NCB-S Manual NO. Z653414
X Is unknown as of yet
Y same as X

Tom,
You DO need to research your spindle drive and spindle motor. Post the model number of the spindle drive here.
You can't use the Mitsubishi servos (even if they did have the drives) that I know of.
You would have to replace all the servo motors, but I would not go there until we know what Spindle drive and spindle motor you have. Does the spindle drive handle spindle orient or do you know?

Pictures of the Spindle drive would be helpful.
Swing arm tool changer....I don't think I would use Acorn for that application...perhaps CNCKeith can chime in.

Marty

What is the issue running the mitsubishi servo's? Is it the encoder or some other issue?

They are AC servos correct?
Unless you can find Mitusbishi drives or drives compatible with them that take step and direction signals(to use Acorn) likely not going to work.
Mitsubishi used a proprietary communication protocol on many of their controls.

Perhaps Marc (cncsnw) might chime in.
Personally, I would not mix and max motors and drives. I would by them paired to work with each other.
Estun, DMM perhaps would work with Acorn.

The spindle drive, if its Mitsubishi may not be able to communicate with any Centroid control. Won't know that until you post pictures and the model number.....
