wiring Acorn and Expansion board

Post by DLAM »

I am finally laying out my back plane for my lathe conversion. Is there an order of precedence for what inputs and outputs gets wired to Acorn and what gets pushed over to the expansion board (ether 1616). I am not sure if there is any real difference between the two as far as timing. I realize the non critical items like are better off on the expansion board.
I am planning on have the Home proximity sensor on their individual inputs rather than combining the in Home all. My thought process is if I have an issue it is easier to troubleshoot and change out a Proximity sensor.
I have the following inputs and outputs planned.
Inputs
- Home Z
- Home X
- ZRI Z
- ZRI X
- E-Stop
- VFD
- 4 BIT Gray Code Turret

Outputs
Coollant Pump
Lube Pump
Turret
VFD
Collet Closure
Parts Catcher
Tail Stock

I am looking for thoughts and validation before I get too far down the Primrose path. Thank You.

I wouldn't put the homing switches on the ETHER1616 board. The time delay between an input tn that board changing state and the system registering it could amount to a significant and inconsistent (positional) error. The other stuff like pumps and spindle take relatively long to do anything, so their timing seems less critical.

I don't recall but assume there is an app note or a post here indicating what is appropriate for pushing out to the ETHER1616 and what isn't. Perhaps Marty or someone else will post a link or make some more official suggestions.

Same here. Home sensors and estop on Acorn. All the rest on the eth 1616 as a few milliseconds won't matter

IIRC, it's of the order of a few hundred milliseconds worst case. Certainly enough to screw up your homing moves.

Please read through and review ALL of the Ether1616 manual. It goes over having you put more critical items on Acorn
