Yam-550 with crusader ML sem 140 vdc anilam encoder Acorn?

Post by Jmamc711 »

I will start off with thank you for your patience. I just bought a in real good shape cnc lathe I am looking to upgrade in my garage shop. I will start off with I know the all in one is what I need but due to funding and the fact I have a complete machine I am trying to run acorn to get me started. In the future upgrade to the all in one. Now I set it all up and plugged her in for the first time and the dash didn’t turn on and got smoke from the computer board side so I shut her down. To start yes it was wired correctly it was all plug and play. The system for the cnc is all stand alone and plugged into a wall plug. This greatly saddened me. But to push on I bought a vfd for the 7.5 hp motor and the spindle sounds great. So back to the point of making the cnc work. I really want to save as much as I can. So trying to run acorn with the factory driver boards and power supply. The brushed dc servo are 140vdc sem. I am having trouble finding if the servo driver boards will work with acorn? Also how to wire them or even test them? Now before you ask what boards are they I have left it all untouched to make sure I don’t mess any wires up and can’t see a number once I get more info I will proceed. Now I know acorn and Mach4 aren’t industrial but I am familiar with them I have a cnc router table with g540 and steppers. I have thought about bolting on some steppers like a said for a few personal small projects but would like to try acorn if I can save the boards and power supply I have. Any info would be great I will post pictures right now.

If the "factor driver boards" are something that came with, and worked with, the old Anilam control, then it is a safe bet that they do not have step-and-direction position-control features. That would mean they cannot be used with Acorn.

So the biggest pain I have seen after that is ok if I can’t use the boards what works with acorn that works on 140vdc I had seen viper but seen that they don’t work well with acorn? Or have seen other people say run under powered boards like the 80v gecko insight?

By the time you buy new steppers or hybrid servos to run with an Acorn, you could have paid for an Oak board and new encoders for your existing servo motors and drives.

Can you run DC servos with Oak?

If the DC servos have servo drivers that accept +-10V signals.

I was just trying to have an excuse to try acorn. I have a couple extra china steppers I can make brackets for and just rob gecko off the router table for my couple projects and to make sure she functions good you never really know a machine till you run it. So only saving grace would be a cheap servo driver board to hook it up to acorn. So guessing $150ish a board and $300 acorn so coming out $600 ish vs $22xx for all in one 🤷‍♂️

Anyone try BRC servo drives from machdrives? They say they hit the volts I need for $159
