Recommended spindle encoder for knee mill

Post by jj84774 »

I see the Acorn documentation recommends a 1000 to 10,000 line count encoder for spindle feedback.

What would you recommend for a spindle encoder on a knee mill with a max. spindle speed of 5000 rpm? The mill has a Universal Engineering Kwik Switch spindle (no drawbar) so I plan on mounting the encoder directly on the top of the spindle. I would like to set up rigid tapping.

I would guess a larger line-count encoder will be more accurate, but probably more prone to noise issues.

Any recommendation?

Numerous posts in the past concerning both mechanical and electrical bandwidth limits. You probably shoudl start with the search function and go over that information to start.

I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are where they should be.

1000 line encoder is adequate. Line driver differential.
Like Tom suggests, use the site search function for spindle encoder

Automationdirect.com is a good source as is Centroid
