DIY cnc router with Acorn and Dyn 4

Post by Panovak »

Ill start my proper build thread here

Building a 4.5 x 9' mechmate router. Mainly used to cut wood. Will use linear rails instead of the normal v bearings. I have the base table made. Now working on the electrical components.

I have no experience in wiring/ electrical but really want to learn. I think it will help out down the road so I can troubleshoot any issues myself. The process now is a steep learning curve and is very slow.

My setup will be using an acorn board to drive dyn4 motors. The x, x1 and y motors are 750w and the z is 400w. These will drive on rack and pinion and will gave a reduction belt of around 4 to 1. I have made my base table long enough to add an indexer at some point. I have purchased the required electrical components to wire this in now.

to give you an anecdote of how new this is to me. I went to Home depot to buy my first wire stripper.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help

Good luck with the build. Everything is easy if done in a methodical, step by step procedure. All of us started out by having a great idea and then learning how to implement that idea. Make a plan. Divide the plan into logical sub-sections. Breadboard or bench test each sub-section until you fully understand how it works. Re-evaluate the sub-section to determine whether it needs additional modifications. Add the sub-section to your router and then test it in place. When all of the sub-sections are installed and tested, your router will be ready to run.

Thanks for the advice Mike. I appreciate it.
I believe I am ready to bench test the acorn and dyn 4. I attached some images of my setup. I followed a couple of Martys videos. I used an old extension cord to provide power to the drives. Which is only 110. I have all the components for the entire power schematic from dmm but Marty suggested this simple setup would be ok for bench testing.
Please look at my pictures and tell me if im missing anything?

Thanks

Also, has the layout of the setup wizard changed. My screen looks different from all the examples I see other people use.

Another question, hopefully the last for today. What is the best way to branch the areas circled in pink from the dmm power supply schematic?

What do you mean by branch? The wiring diagram is branched.

You'll have to keep in mind that i have never wired anything ever before this. What i am wondering is literally how do i accomplish the wired described in the branched areas. What type of connectors/ connections do I use.
Also I when i plugged in the power to my drives initially the motor started to hum so i unplugged it immediately. Is it normal for servos to hum before they are properly programmed?

I used these cuz they are cheap, but you can use the dinrail mounted Terminals if you want it to be more professional. Just depends on your budget and the look you're going for.

terminal blocks.
There are different types. Basically They have connections from one side to the other with a barrier in between. You can make jumper wire to connect the "rows".

I prefer DIN rail mounted, purchased with pre made jumpers.

Thanks guys, very much appreciated! I order the din rail mount ones.

Also I have movement of out my motors! The humming noise was actually my speaker which must have been picking up some frequency when i plugged the drive power on.

I have successfully bench tested each motor/ drive individually . My plan now is to continue bench testing the system as a whole.

Im assuming that any axis can go in any st, dr, en location as long as its accounted for in the configuration within the wizard.
I also have images of my current wiring to acorn board with the 4 axis.
