Question, re: DC Spindle Motor and KBIC DC Motor Controller Rating

Post by EricMack »

OVERVIEW
For my spindle, I am using a 1.5HP treadmill motor (Apparently, these claims are often greatly exaggerated)
I have my Acorn connected to a KBIC Speed Controller, which is rated for up to a 1HP DC motor

I have tested this combination together on the bench and I know they work together - at least on the bench.

Before I move this to a mill, I'm trying to wrap my head around the electrical relationship between the two.

QUESTION
Will using this slightly larger (1.5HP) DC motor with a smaller (1HP) speed controller mean that the motor will simply be driven only as fast as the controller can supply power? Or, will the larger motor draw so much power that it will release the magic smoke from the DC Motor controller?

The latter is correct. Puff.

Confidence is the feeling you have before you fully understand the situation.
I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are where they should be.
