As Tom said. IF you set up your machine correctly (did you follow the FINE DRO) tuning (attached) Use a long known dimension standard. I have a 12" end measure I use on setting up mills I had calibrated with a CMM. I also have a set of solid 1-2-3 blocks I also had calibrated.
Then use ballscrew comp. What kind of machine do you have? Picture?
