Switch failed to clear during homing <resolved, switch arm too long>

Post by beebee »

I did a search for information on this topic unfortunately I found nothing. My limits were
working fine. I didn’t reconfigure any limit or homing parameters.
I did lower the jog speeds come to think about it.
The only item I’ve been working on is fighting to find the correct motor parameters.
Revs per etc.
I’m also learning the software. I’m not certain but if I can’t home. It seems I don’t see
functioning XYZ readout shown on the display. I still have a lot to learn coming from Mach3.
I’ll do another report and attach it.
Thanks and Regards.

Attach a report when seeking assistance
Attach a picture of the switch
IF you trigger the switch (with the jog arrows) how much movement is required to clear that switch?

Report attached. The limit is a mechanical limit. It does move a lot to trip the z.
But it was working a few days ago. I also tripped the z by hand then it went to the
next homing limit and I got the same error.

hello. does the switch close the input when you trigger it or open in the input when you trigger it?
how much movement does it take to trigger and release? use a multimeter to prove it out.

this is your problem.. this is not good practice for a CNC machine tool home switch..

have you been shopping at tractor farm supply for conveyor belt limit switches? :D

Thank you. But what is good homing practice. A shorter movement. I never
was aware, since it seemed to work fine with Mach 3.

have you been shopping at tractor farm supply for conveyor belt limit switches
No Automation Direct. I assumed since they deal with automation technology they would be fine.

also, i recommend selling the DC servos and related gecko drives if you'd like to improve performance and accuracy as well.
this machine would be much better served with a set of modern AC brushless motors and drives like Clearpath, Estun, Delta, etc...

and...this is also not good cnc practice for encoder and encoder wire protection and strain relief.. this is problems in the making.

if you are getting the failed to clear message from CNC12 it is telling you that the switch needs more than 1/2 " of travel to clear..which is ridiculous. :D
A good Z home switch and mounting and wiring is important. You want good home switches that are accurate. A good home switch allows you to have accurate homing as possible. This is important for a number of reasons... one is... A popular way to set tool lengths (automatically or manually) with a router is to base the point in which to measure the tool length from on the Z home position. If you have accurate homing then you won't have to reset your tools or Work Coordinate System as often... so, while this switch was working with mach3 doesn't mean it was working well. :D

you could probably get this switch to work if you rework the mounting and significantly shorten the arm(s) that trigger the switch.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’d like to improve the machine. I believe it’s been mentioned before to upgrade from brushed servos and the gecko drive.
On my machine with new drives and motors with the 5 tip what could I expect for
machining times on 3d surfaces. At the moment I’m able to machine violin top at
70 ipm. Without servo faults.
Thanks for the update on the limit switch. I had a feeling the movement might be to far.
