Seig SX3 spindle control help needed

Post by b_laauwen »

Hello All
I have just completed setting up all my axis and home limits on the Acorn. I am now trying to deal with the spindle. I am running the original spindle control board with a cnc spindle control kit from little machine shop. It is the XMT-SK.

https://littlemachineshop.com/images/ga ... adeKit.pdf

The issue I have is that I am only able to get the spindle to run in forward not reverse. Does anyone have an idea of how i could get this to work.

Thanks in advance

You have not provided enough information. You are assuming we know what spindle controller is used with your machine.
I assume you are asking other Seig users....

Pictures, make and model of the drive, link to a manual/schematics etc.
Be careful. Acorn expects a signal isolator on such drives. Many have had good luck with the KBSI-240D

Yup.
I have the KX4 drive pulley so my max RPM is approx 4115.
I had a really hard time setting this up to avoid noise. (Spindle speed randomly changing, slowing with movement of whatever axis) I hypothesize this was related to ground loops or heat. I use shielded 4/18 cable. I have not had any issues since I have set it up as outlined below. That does not mean it's the right/best way. For sure do this at your own risk. (Sorry have to say it)

Acorn Wizzard Setup:I/O
Output 1: Spin Break Release.
Output 2: G540 SpinRevOff

Acorn Wiring:
Output Relay #1: COM: ->START/STOP on LMS BOARD NC : 5V From LMS Board output (May be redundant) NO: Low Voltage Common Bar
Output Relay #2: COM: ->F/R on LMS Board NC: Low Voltage Common Bar NO: +5v From LMS Board
Analog Spindle Control: Negative LV common Bar Positive : AVI Port on LMS Board

To Clarify my LMS Board Looks like this:
AC1:AC Power +
AC2:AC Power - ( Tied to Chassis ground bar for CPU/PSU/Mill)
+5V : The 5V is made by the board, NC leg of the Output relay 1 on the Acorn Side as well as the NO leg of relay 2
Gnd: This goes to a low voltage common bar.
FIn: No connection.
F/R: This goes to the common leg of relay 2
AVI - this goes to the positive analog spindle output on the acorn.

Disconnect SX3 side of LMS board.
In CNC12 select manual spindle control.
Max out RPM - Turn POT on LMS board until you get an output of approx 5v with max RPM ( Acorn will be putting out 10v)
WARNING : TO the best of my understanding this works similar to a voltage divider, this generates heat - I suggest fabricating a heat sink and fan setup for the LMS board.

Again, this is how I made it work. There is very poor documentation regarding this but I didnt feel it was necessary to buy the additional KMS? board because the LMS board does appear be optically isolated. (Again, no documentation but I researched the chips on the board and traced them through) I am not an expert, I would appreciate any input if someone feels there is a better way to do this!

Thanks,
Bob

Milton, I think it would work provided the KBSI240D you discovered is used no?

Thanks bkerr001. this looks like what might be what I am looking for. I will be giving it a go later. I am sure that i read somewhere that the lms board is optoisolated. I just couldn't work out the setup of the forward and reverse control.
