Phoenix Magnum 2'x2' CNC Router Upgrade

Post by martyscncgarage »

I acquired a 2'x2' CNC router made by Phoenix/Magnum technologies awhile back. Long story short, it belonged to a friend of mine who passed away. He started the Acorn conversion using DC Brush Servos. He left it to his brother who was a woodworker. I benchtested the parts, tuned the DC Brush servos as best I could and he wired up the cabinet. Fast forward. He decided learning CAD/CAM wasn't for him so I purchased the machine from him.
It is well built, from thick aluminum plate, large round linear rail and ballscrews.

I cared NOT for the DC Brush servos and during some testing had trouble with them and decided it was time to clean up the control cabinet and replace the DC Brush Servos with DMM Technologies NEMA 23 400W AC Servos. I thought as I started folks might be interested to see. I do not go into detail, since most of the details for configuring the control had been covered in other videos. So let's just call it an informal build. I am new to CNC routers. I think this machine will do well for drilling back panels, engraving aluminum, plastic work etc., and not take a lot of floor space. My buddy had built a nice cart for it.

Just finished the back panel, I briefly show setting up the DMM DYN2 drives.
Panel is mounted in its cabinet. If time permits next week, I'll run cables and mount the servo motors.

Yes, great job Marty. Thanks for the great videos.

I greatly enjoyed retrofitting my chinese machine with the Acorn. Closed loop steppers are the next upgrade.

Glad you got something out of them.
Sorry they aren't as formal, but some content is better than no content! :)

Closed loop hybrid systems are the way to go if you can muster the cost.

Don't apologize at all, as you said, some content is better than no content. I only have my iPhone for a camera and want to post videos but it never comes out right or sounds good. Still working on it.

As for the closed loop hybrid system, it doesn't look to be that expensive actually. I visited the Automation Technology website and looked at their NEMA 34 hybrid systems. They have a DC and an AC version. Do you have a preference?

I have a Blue Elephant 6090 CNC with a 3kw water cooled spindle, Fuling VFD and NEMA 34 steppers all ran beautifully with the Acorn. I have some parts to cut today or tomorrow and will post a pic.

Here's a link to the machine, I bought it used off CL.
