Quadrature Error with DYN4 Spindle Servo

Post by pbaudio »

I am running the latest version of CNC12 with Acorn board V3 and using relay number 3 on the breakout board to control the power from a 24v PSU to control the brake on my Z axis DMM servo.

Everything is working OK as far as i can tell but the only way i can get the relay to switch the brake off with the 24v is to press cycle start in CNC12 and in turn this activates the relay, this would not be a problem but i am using a servo motor for the spindle connected via the encoder connection on the acorn board so when i press the reset button on Acorn and power cycle the servo drives i get a quadrature error on the spindle encoder unless release the z axis brake quickly by pressing the cycle start button after resetting it.

Is there a way i can get the relay to turn on without having to press the cycle start button quickly just after resetting ? The brake will not be needed once the reset button has been pressed as the z axis servo will have power running to it preventing the z axis to fall as far as i can tell.

I hope this all makes sense and any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Phil

Phil,
hello!
Please post a fresh report.zip
photos of the machine and z axis
and info on what motors and drives are being used and how they are wired. and then with that info can help you out! :D

Hi Keith,

Thanks for helping, i have attached a report and some photos, its a total mess at the moment as you can see.

I have actually come to the conclusion it has nothing to do with the brake at all but I still have to hit the cycle start just after reset on acorn otherwise i get the quadrature error on the spindle servo.

I have all the DYN2 drive power supply's and the DYN4 setup on contactors that come on when you press the reset button in acorn.

The brake has its own 24v psu, i am using the other 24v psu to power the acorn board and anything else that needs it like the servo drive encoder cables on the 5v line.

Eveything seems to run totaly fine if i hit that cycle start button in time :?

Many Thanks
Phil

Must use the bko output on the drive and a relay. Had issues of the brake not released. The enable circuit on the dny4 sends the signal to the bko to release when motion is commanded. Maybe this is not the same problem but just putting it here.
Dale.

If you turn off power to the drive that is repeating the encoder signal, you will get an encoder error.
Either don't turn off the drive, or ignore the error(s) with parameters 332-335.

If the Z brake is causing noise issues, connect a snubber (diode) to clamp the brake coil flyback voltage.

I have done some more testing and it has nothing to do with the brake or relays, the only way i can get it to not make the error is press cycle start just after reset like in this video i have just posted to youtube.

Thank you that has fixed the issue i just hope it will not create other problems down the road.

Many Thanks

I've been gone a couple of days...
Describe the machine?
I assume you are trying to use a DMM DYN4 and a motor as a spindle drive?
Did you tell DMM at the time of order you needed it to work this way?
Did you get the schematic sheet to wire it up as a spindle motor?
What kind of cable did you use between Acorn Encoder DB9 and the DYN4 DB9?
Are you using 120VAC to feed DYN4 or 240VAC?

Did you go to CNC12's PID screen and note the spindle encoder pulses?

I work with DMM and their drives so I am interested in hearing more. I can't "SEE" what you see so need more pieces of the puzzle.
Marty
