Looks like the days of decent home-built wire EDM machines might be upon us. This guy/company in the Netherlands is selling an arc generator (the big expense of such a machine) and has an in-depth video compilation of how to build his open-source mechanical platform:

Not cheap at €2,950, but not crazy out of reach, considering that's the main expense in an EDM system. Ben Krasnow, the Applied Science YouTube guy, built a wire EDM drill using this arc generator (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpHYBz7ToII). He had to use boards and controller software from Dynamotion, because, according to him, it's one of the few boards that allows you to have a "negative feed rate", so that you can go backwards to clear the frequent shorts that occur when the electrode hits the workpiece.
It's all just begging to be controlled by an Acorn. I know v4.26 is meant to have a plasma plug-in. How cool would it be if an EDM plug-in followed shortly thereafter?
Slightly OT: Acorn controlled wire EDM
