Thank you for all the replies. Turns out the Gibbs were a little too tight to then point where I would loose .002-.003" of motion before the screw would reverse.

I went ahead and ordered the higher resolution motors and am much happier with the results.

As far as my inconsistent readings, I think it was my dial indicator. It was the feeler gauge type with only about .030 to .040" of range.

I put a 2 inch dial indicator on the turret and checked the z-axis over about 5 inches. at the very most, I was getting an error of maybe .001". Close enough for me. I had similar results in the x-axis movement.
