Mixing Steppers and Servos Motors

Post by tampaRay »

I am new here so please excuse me if this is a dumb question. I am in the midst of converted a mill to CNC using the Acorn board. I bought three DMM DYN2 Servos for the conversion but one of them was DOA and so I've sent it back for repair.

It could take some time before the repaired servo motor is returns but I have a stepper with a Gecko G201X drive that I was going to try to use for the Y-axis until the repaired motor is returned.

Does this sound like something that would work? Any issues with having a mix of motor types?

Thanks,

Ray

There is no problem mixing steppers and servos or any kind of different types of drives, as long as they take step/direction input AND they are set up correctly. Understanding what is required and how to wire it to the Acorn board is most important.
For reference, My mill uses 3 DMM Dyn2 servos/drives for X, Y, and Z and the fourth axis is a stepper with a Gecko 203v drive. Reference the Centroid supplied schematics for each drive on how to hook them up, and ask questions here if you get bogged down.

make sure all the different drives you use can run at the same step frequency.
