quill on cnc benchtop mill

Post by galyion »

I have a Pm25mv mill i'm starting to convert. sitting here at work thinking about it i have a question. what do you guys do about the quill. the z axis motor will move the head up but the quill in not controlled. i'm planning on using tts holders so i don't have to retouch of tools so much. should i just lock it at top of travel and forget about it?

YES! Lock the quill. Move the head up and down the dovetail column in true bed mill fashion.

Re:- Acorn rev 4, can the "P10" connector be used with a glass scale connected to the quill and some how summed to the Z axis, have been searching the forum but not making much headway

It MAY be possible, perhaps Marc or someone else will chime in. That encoder port was intended for use with a spindle encoder.
That said, the encoder signal must be +5V Line Driver differential. You would also need to know what pulses the scale puts out.

CNC12 can do this, but the Acorn wizard cannot. You will have to manually change parameters to get this configured and anytime you use the wizard the changes will get overwritten.
Cheers,

I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are where they should be.

TB131 although for CNC7 "seems" to be the right direction - i have tried it on a offline version (Demo) of CNC12 - parameters seem right, DRO displays as should, can anybody confirm if i am barking up the right tree here

That's an interesting setup option, particularly for knee / turret mills although it will a) prevent use of the spindle encoder and presumably b) occupy your 4th axis space within CNC12, preventing use of a rotary unit?
