Ah! I’ll need a 5vdc power supply (if I can’t use what I already have).

Digging into the Acorn docs, trying to get everything I need on the way so I can attempt to do the conversion when the Acorn system arrives. A few questions:

1. Do I need flyback diodes on the built in relay contacts? One will be switching power for a small pneumatic solenoid. The other is an external PLC input (my dust collection has PLC controls) so I can’t see it necessary there.

2. I'm new to this stepper drive stuff. The docs say the DB25 provides the 5vdc TTL that it looks like my drivers will need. Is this correct?

3. The photos appear to show a female DB25. I'd like a screw terminal DB25 breakout board. Is the DB25 on the Acorn board female?

4. My machine has Omron TL-05MC1-Z proximity switches for home/limit. Will these work with the screw terminal inputs of the Acorn board?

Thank you in advance!

1) That depends on if your solenoids have them if connected to the relays (OP1, OP2) or your connected relays have them. In other words that is determined by the components you connect. MArty has a nice video showing a relay board.

2) It appears that way

3) Yes. My "gender change relay video shows this

4) Yes

Gary - thank you for the quick reply and information! I'm slowly wrapping my head around this. I watched your video, several actually. I opted for a DB25 breakout board. I also ordered a 24vdc and 5vdc relay board from Amazon just in case I end up needing one or both. They were a few bucks.

More questions..

1. It looks to me like the Leadshine schematic fits my situation well with the drives needing 5v for the step and direction. Am I correct in my thinking I need to source a 5vdc power supply to run this? Or is the DB25 5v TTL going to do that? (I'm aware the Leadshine schematic shows a separate 5vdc power supply.)

2. My drives don't call out enable. It's a Chinese drive.. They do have "MF" (motor free). The drives currently only have four wires connected on the DB shell - DR+(5v), DR-, PU+(5v) and PU-. DR+ and PU+ connected to the 5v terminal on the XHC controller output for the axis and DR- / PU- on the direction and pulse outputs of the controller for the axis. I'm not familiar with the necessity of the axis Enable output. It _looks_ like MF could be Enable..?

3. I *think* FL +/- will be another +5vdc from external power supply for drive fault/alarm. I can use interposing 5v cool relays on each and series up those contacts for a drive alarm input to the Acorn board.

1) If you use the DB 25 pins you should not need a 5v power supply unless the connections to MF (+/-) or Enable are required to allow the drive to run

2) See above

3) I agree, same hookup as I used for mine with the 5v 4gang relay board

Gary, thank you for the response!

After watching Franco’s YouTube video where he too is using the Leadshine schematic, I’m going to go with that as a starting point. I picked up a nice Omron 5vdc power supply on eBay for a good price.

Looking at the Fuling VFD connections now. Not sure how to handle the programmable output connection I’ll be using for drive fault. My drive only has MCM-M01/M02, not the ACB. I’m not sure how to connect the interposing relay coil.

You will need to post the parameter options available in sections F2.19~F2.21 to see if drive fault is among the list

It is available, option 7. I have programming instructions. I only have F2.19 and F2.20 on this drive. F2.21 is on other models, but not this one. My question is how to connect F2.20 (M02 - MCM) to the Acorn?

Dell Optiplex 3050 all in one with touchscreen arrived today. If you’re looking for a control computer, check out Dell Outlet. I got this machine for $620 shipped with their top tier warranty - 512gb ssd, 4gb RAM, 7th Generation i3-7100T Processor, Windows 10 Pro, etc.

UPS is supposed to have the Acorn to me Friday.

Acorn arrived. Everything is mounted to the backplate.

Turns out the included power supply has a 2.2A 5 volt rail in addition to the 1A 24 volt.
