Can someone look at my mill report please?

Post by DICKEYBIRD »

I installed Acorn #2 in the mill cabinet I'm building. It's going to be a while before it's ready so I installed the mill software on the lathe's PC. (Lathe & mill on the same PC.) All went well with the bench test. When I finished wiring the drivers, the motors lock down & get warm but they won't move at all under Acorn control. The DRO's do show movement when the jog buttons are pressed or if the sample program is run. I've attached the report. I'm sure it's something silly so go ahead, make my day.

Can you tell me if you wired the ENABLE to the drives?
If so, the Enable may be inverted. Go into the Wizard, Tab 4 Advanced. Check the ENABLE boxes, Write the settings and try again....
(What might be happening, is when Acorn sends the step/dir signals it is DISABLING the drives. Because you say they are holding, without motion, leads me to believe the inverted ENABLE might be your problem)

Report back....

Yup, wired the same as the lathe which works OK. The Leadshine tab in the wizard inverts the enable (I think.) SWMBO says I've been out it that #%^&^# shop too long today so I had to go back in the house with m'tail between my legs. It'll have to wait 'til tomorrow after work. :(

When you start CNC12, but before you home are the motors locked or free?
I think they should be free until you home the machine or try to move the motors....
Until tomorrow.....

Double check this Milton.
It sounds to me like something isn't wired right.
These are the exact same drives you have in your lathe?

Maybe one of the Centroid Techs can give your Report file a better look over than I.

The mill has Leadshine DM542's & the lathe has the cheaper Longs Motor DM542A's. They look very similar and have the same connection terminology. I feel pretty sure it's as you say something wired wrong but so far I haven't found it.

I followed the Acorn rev3 Leadshine schematic with the separate 5V PS to the letter. What about the 'com' terminals on the H2 & H3 connectors though? Nothing is shown connected there on the schematic. Surely they're there for a reason; if so what is it?

Milton,
Is this your manual?

Do you have the jumpers inside? How are they set?

I have version 1.0's Marty. I didn't even know they had a version 2.0! I have the .pdf manual linked to from the Amazon page where I purchased them. A quick comparison didn't show much difference between them other than the 1.0 has 2 jumpers & the 2.0 has 3. I haven't taken the cover off yet to see how they're set. It's always freakin' SUMTHIN!

Where did you come up with that manual?

Just did a search.
The jumpers seem to configure the drive. May have something to do with your troubles?
