I hate solder cups, I prefer to crimp my pins but there are SOLDERLESS solutions:
DB-9 Male breakout board with shell (on this one you will have to futz with securing it to the Acorn DB9, but it is available in the US):

This one out of China has the proper binding posts to securing it to Acorn's DB9:

For you guys working with Geckodrive G540, these are the best because there is a pot where you dial in the current resistor value. Yes there are solder but much easier than solder cups, and for a set of 4 very well priced:
