Enable outputs on Acorn

Post by kman1967 »

I am using a DB25 interface for my stepper motor outputs. While using this are the enable outputs on H2 and H3 still active to use?

If so are the active high or low for enabled?

When selecting the D25 connections in the wizard the behavior of the "Enable" terminals on H2 and H3 are inverted since most stepper drives are enabled by default and need a signal to disable them. Therefore these outputs are pulled low when the axis is NOT enabled. This behavior can be changed in the Advanced Axis Configuration menu.

Please tell us what stepper drive you are using, most stepper drives are enabled by default and the ENA connection is not needed.

Thanks guys. That's the info I need. Although the drives are enabled by default, I am looking to disable them when required.

.

Can you explain when that would be?

If you disable drives on an Acorn, you will have to re-home everytime you re-enable the drives. Acorn is an open-loop system.

Yes, what he's talking about doing makes no sense at all. Hopefully he'll elaborate on the "why".

This machine is in our R&D department. As part of the hazard assessment, one of the requirements is the disabling of the drives. It a requirement stipulated by our safety team which I don't have much say in. Honestly, I have found over time it's best just to do than to argue, less headaches.

If you have a properly configured E-Stop, this will already do the job or am I missing something?
Hope this helps

I agree with Nigelo. Foremost, your emergency stop circuit should remove power from the stepper drivers. That should reliably ensure that the motors are free of power and torque whenever emergency stop is pressed.
