The laptop stays plugged in 100% of the time (the battery life is already terrible, it's older)
This problem didn't happen before, but does now, with no change to the laptop. The change in behaviour points to it being something new.

The fact is Laptops were not supported before and they are still not supported. You were just lucky to get away with it before. A bit like using WTI crude as the engine lube in your Chevy
Hope this helps

I think my steppers may have been overheating after all. It's running currently as a test so I can't post a new report yet.

The Y axis steppers were really hot this time when it, was stuttering, last time the front one wasn't that hot but maybe the rear one on the far side of the machine was worse (dual y axis drives)

Why is it hot now but not before? It's been crazy hot in the garage because of this summer heat wave here, and I'm running long carves that mainly use one axis at a time. I'm rastering Y mainly right now.

I'll post the next report after this part is done, but hopefully just turning down the amps from my drivers will solve the problem, even if it means I can't cut insane speeds in the hot summer.

You may have said this before, but what steppers and drivers are you running?

These steppers and drivers:
edit: they are wired bipolar parallel

I think that they have been overheating in the summer, especially when I do longer cuts. I've turned down the amps from the drivers and I managed to get through a whole toolpath yesterday.

hopefully this is the issue, because it is easily fixed.
