No pedantry there Tom, it was my mistake.

After a bit of time to experiment with some of the various functions that the Acorn has, I must say that I'm impressed both with the greater quality of finish and the ease of use of the conversational programming interface.
I do have another question though: When I cut a taper (lets say 45 degrees) I specify the depth of cut to be conservative, say 0.1mm, but the amount of material to be removed is far greater than that. The lathe, however tries to remove all of the material in one pass. Why? I am obviously doing some thing incorrectly.

Can you post the program files (.lth and .cnc)? Also a report, so we can see the tool nose compensation.

I will post it when I get home. Thinking about it, though you are probably right.

I have changed the tool nose radius to an imperial dimension 0.016" instead of 0.4mm to see if that helps. Since I have the machine set up as metric, this doesn't seem right, but sometimes....
Here is the file that I used. I had to select "end face" rather than "Radius" mode to get the graph to look like I wanted the end product to look. FYI, it is a foot for a sliding clamp. My instinct was to use radius turning to produce this part, but the lathe was going to ignore my 6.5mm (approx 1/2 inch) small dimension and turn a pointed cone instead. I'm sure this is just me not understsanding the software. The part has a 13mm x 5.5mm cylinder on top of a tapered foot for the clamp.
On the first cut the lathe takes a deep cut to acheive the required taper, then it follows with cuts of the requested depth.

Post your .icn file so we can see the Intercon program.

To use the turning/facing canned cycle the way you are wanting to, you would need to shift the starting Z to the right by 5.5mm or so. Considerable time would be spent cutting air, but the cut depth would not be excessive that way.

Alternately, use the Profile cycle instead.

See http://www.cncsnw.com/LatheNotes308.htm and scroll down to the Intercon -> Programming Options section.

Here it is Tom (I think), I am assuming that intercon appends the machine type:

It looks like I've got a lot to learn. Since the car accident and resultant head injury, I've found that my learning ability is greatly impaired. I'm fine with things that I knew before the car crash, but new things are a battle.
I see that the way to avoid the issue that I was seeing is to use a profile, or, as you say, cut air for a while 1st. Is the manual the best place to learn about profiles, or are there other areas to visit?
