60 x 10 dc fan recommendation
I was just bench tested a 2.6KW JMC AC servo. It seems to be made fairly well and everything ran great. I am probably a bit on the crazy side with trying to keep my machines as quiet as possible. The loudest part here is the 60 x 10 24-volt brushless fan that cools the servo driver.
Do you have any recommendations for similar fans that run quiet?
It appears that its main function is cooling the internal braking resistor. I am thinking of using a 200-watt 91 ohm braking resistor from an old VFD. I imagine that if I use an external braking resistor, the fan will no longer have much to cool. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks... Richard

Noctura is the go-to brand for quiet PCs but I don't know if they'll have a drop-in replacement. Worth a look.
Also, how much a cooling fan is needed for the braking resistor is directly dependent upon how often the braking resistor is used, and how much energy is being absorbed. Point being, you "may" be able to disconnect the fan and be fine, but you'll have to experiment to see if that's okay. Looking at the pic, those cooling fins tell me that there may well be other stuff that's being cooled, like the switching transistors, so you may need a fan regardless. So, yeah, look into Noctura.

Re: 60 x 10 dc fan recommendation
Thanks for your feedback. There are two Noctua fans that I think will work:
They make a 40x40x10 4 pin 24 volt fan. I think I can use just two wires and let it run at full speed. Do you know if this is correct?
The specs say 19.6db which is probably quieter than the stock fan:

My second thought is to use a 40x20x20 12 volt fan (I have 12V in the cabinet) and 3d print a bracket to mount it to the exterior of the servo driver. This would pull more air and is only 14.9db.

Again... Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: 60 x 10 dc fan recommendation
PWM fans will not work without a pwm signal. The second 3-wire fan will work, but a 4-wire fan will not.
Cheers,

Re: 60 x 10 dc fan recommendation
Thanks for the tip on the 3 pin fan. I think I am going to use a 3 pin 12v noctua fan. I can easily get 12v to it. I noticed that these fans push less CFM than there louder similar fans. Do you think this will be a problem?

Re: 60 x 10 dc fan recommendation
The drive manufacturer put a specific fan on their drive that has a specific CFM to cool the components so if you deviate from that the drive and/or resistor could obviously run hotter which is not a good thing. All this for a noise you wont hear when you are machining? Yes, I'd agree that you are a bit crazy.

Re: 60 x 10 dc fan recommendation
You'll never find a low-voltage DC muffin fan that will approach the airflow of a 120V/240V AC fan. Look for a 120VAC Comair Rotron, EBM-Papst, Orion, or Sanyo Denki. You'll never have problems with those as they are designed to run 24/7 almost forever. You'll find cheaper ones on Amazon, but they'll cost you more.
Cheers,
Tom

I love the 240v EBM-Papst all metal fans. Bullet proof and they move some air. I'm sure it's too loud for Richard.

Re: 60 x 10 dc fan recommendation
You guys are too funny. I wasn't able to locate a 120V 40x40x10 ac quiet fan. I realized however that the I could move the servo driver in the cabinet, so it is in the direct air flow of the cabinet fan. This being the case, I think I will be safe with the Noctua quiet fan.
