DM 860A Driver and PSU Questions

Post by garybergin288 »

i bought a ebay special stepper motor, driver and psu bundle for a 3 axis manual mill i am converting, nema 34 stepper motors 6amp 12nm dm 860a drivers and a power supply for each driver. PSU is a longs S-350-60, 24-60v output so two main questions for now at least. they dont really specify what i should set the voltage at should i crank it to the max or somewhere in the middle? also as far as the dip switches on the driver the stepper motors say 6 amps so do i set the dip switchs as close to 6amps on the peak or rms number this is my first real cnc build so i have questions by the truckload i try to do my due diligence and research but sometimes i just cant find an exact answer so this forum has been great

The correct voltage for stepper motors is based on their inductance. See this thread for information:

I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are where they should be.

Use this one, it's for the DM series. Centroid can't possibly test every drive model number but this will work for your drive.

so with this formula i can get the max voltage? but im not sure what voltage to use my motors are 8mh inductance someone said to use the full 60volts im just making sure that this would be correct

The drivers are good to 80 volts so that's going to limit the voltage at 80 no matter what. Actually your power supply is rated to 60v so that's all you have unless you buy another power supply. Use the formula to calculate what the motors can handle and if it's more than 60 then use 60.
