Converting a Pm1236t to cnc where do I home z too

Post by WINSTON »

I am trying to convert a pm1236t too cnc and am in the design stage . But can't figure out what to home z off of . Do I home it off the tail stock or a fixed point on the lathe bed. If I home it off the bed it could crash into the tail stock limit switch but if it's off the tail stock I'll have to re home every time I change tail stock positions correct? What's the proper way of homing z? Thanks

On my lathe, I have my Z home switch on the bed set to contact the carriage with the tailstock as far back as possible. I also have a Z+ limit switch on the carriage that will contact the tailstock just before the two physically touch.

To home, move the tailstpck all the way to the end. Home switch touches carriage, limit switch does not touch the tailstock. Machine homes.

During use, you move the tailstock forward to drill a hole and forget to move it back, or you move it forward to work with a live center. If the carriage moves back and is about to hit the tsilstock, the limit switch makes stopping movement. Just jog the carriage away from the chuck to clear the limit error and resume.
Cheers,

Tom
