Spindle encoder - will this work?
I'm working on a Hardinge retrofit with the Acorn and need to order a spindle encoder. Using this for reference as to requirements
Will this work?
https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/sh ... a-2e2500vd
I think my confusion is the wording in the requirements that says "8,000 - 40,000 encoder counts per revolution (2,000 - 10,000 'line' " In my searched I couldn't find where they were specified as either of those; only as "ppr". Sorry if this is an elementary question but this is my first time dealing with a spindle encoder.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Spindle encoder - will this work?
You really only need a 1000 line encoder and that is light duty. If you plan on hanging a timing pulley on it, you want at least a medium duty encoder.ecdez wrote: ↑Fri Dec 04, 2020 5:05 pm I'm working on a Hardinge retrofit with the Acorn and need to order a spindle encoder. In my opinion.

Danaher encoder. H23250010403B. 3/8 shaft 5-26V 10ft cable 2500 ppr
I bought one of the above on ebay NIB for 60.00 delivered. It is working perfectly with my Acorn.
NIB/NOS on ebay can get quality indistrial components at a fraction of new cost.

Re: Spindle encoder - will this work?
In encoder specifications, "ppr" means the same as "lines". The control will see 4x that number of counts for each revolution of the encoder.
See http://www.cncsnw.com/Quadrature.htm for an explanation why.
I agree with Marty that for typical applications (running from a few hundred to a few thousand RPM), a spindle encoder should have around 1000 or 1024 lines.
You can use a light duty encoder, as long as you design a mount with its own shaft, pulley, and bearing, so there is negligible mechanical load on the encoder shaft.

Apparently I searched the wrong phrase
Thanks for the link and thanks for all the responses. Looks like I'm pointed in the right direction.

Re: Spindle encoder - will this work?
Also, mentioned in a recent thread, you have to watch the encoder max RPM rating

Re: Spindle encoder - will this work?
Good reminder. I will verify before purchase.
Also, someone mentioned earlier about mounting the encoder. The lathe has a bracket for one so any face mount encoder should do the trick without putting too much on the encoder spindle.

I'll get one this afternoon.
