do i need to mount an encoder to read my spindle speed on a PM-30?
i tried finding this info on other forums.
the reason i would want to control spindle speed and have an encoder to send feedback to the board of the speed, is if i want to try my hand at rigid tapping, correct?
i have looked at Franco's 727 videos, i think it can be done on my PM-30MV, but finding a way to mount the encoder is the only hiccup i can foresee.
and when you mount the encoder your want a 1:1 ratio correct?
thank you for any help in advance,
RKM

Re: Encoder for spindle PM-30MV
You are correct that a spindle encoder is essential only for rigid tapping.
It is a nicety for spindle speed display and a couple related features.
For rigid tapping, it is highly preferable that it be at a 1:1 ratio.
If it is not at a 1:1 ratio, you can still rigid tap, but you cannot peck tap, or otherwise tap the same hole twice, unless you do some electronic sleight-of-hand to substitute proximity sensor feedback for the encoder index pulse.
