Hi All,
Here's a little Optimum Mill upgrade I just finished up. Still a couple of little sheet metal parts to tidy it up, but all running smoothly and into production. I'm pretty pleased with how the sheet metal enclosure turned out - it's all laser cut, folded and rivetted together.
The brains are the Acorn, motor drives are all Gecko G320's (which we're "fun" getting to play nicely) and servo's from Kelling. Spindle encoder for the rigid tapping is an Omron something-something, coupled up with an Adlee match-servo for the spindle drive.
Tool changing is via a TTS system with a pneumatic over oil cylinder.
Mechanically there are very few factory parts left - just the castings and spindle cartridge! All axis are ballscrewed, and the X-Y have HGH15 Linear rails.
For bonus points, I'm using a retractable car window shade as a prototype ship shield that covers the Y & Z axis. Plan is to build a custom version with heavier duty parts, but so far it's running well and not clogging up with chips
All the best from NZ,
James

Re: Optimum BF20 Running on Acorn
very nice, thanks for posting the great photos. i like the round linear rail for the doors.
post a video of the machine in action on youtube! and post link here.
kodos and glad you got the G320's and the dc servos working... i wouldn't of had the patience for that and just tossed on a set of clearpaths.

This looks great! Would love to see more pictures of the inside of the enclosure or some work in progress pics if you have them.
